Pasting from Excel

Continuing the discussion from State: For £20 I'll sue MilwaukeePC for allowing DFS to have another sale:
Found out my employer discontinued HSA contribution matching. Not from my employer. But from my account statement.
<img src="/uploads/default/14439/04618c9479c3c4de.png" width="652" height="161">
Apparently everyone else noticed and got their whining out of the way during healthcare enrollment season. I truly work for the most despicable pile of shitfuckers on the planet. They killed 401K matching a few years ago.
Discourse note: I copypasta'd that from Excel. It pasted the raw text PLUS an image of a table? Did we get a wooden table plugin!?
Repro without fixing it (From my credit card this time, because it's far more amusing than my HSA)

That's from one of my Excel files… and it's a totally different result.

I'm using Excel 2010, in case that matters. On Win7, in case it's a clipboard thing.

What browser are you pasting into? I'm on Chrome hasn't-been-restarted-in-weeks-so-not-up-to-date.

Firefox 35.0.1

This is the same as the image-and-svg
bugthing isn't it?
-
Looks like it. Stupid browser trying to be helpful

The Windows clipboard allows the data to be stored in multiple formats-- for example, when you copy from Excel you get the data in Excel's native format, HTML, CSV (possibly? I don't remember for sure), and as a final fallback, an image. Clients are supposed to pick the first format listed that they understand.
For some idiotic reason, Chrome (and/or Discourse) is seems to be picking all of the formats it understands. You're supposed to pick just one.
-
Interesting, I'd always wondered how that works, but have never had occasion to code clipboard interaction code.
I expect it's Dicsores' fault, because this shit works just fine pasting into Gmail.
Perhaps the biggest irony is that Dicsores actually supports HTML, which would be the most useful way to do this, and is for some reason ignoring that one.
-

One of the few things Windows actually did better than Mac Classic. Which (originally at least) only allowed one data type per clipboard item.
BTW this is also a good illustration of the, "before you write software for a computer, maybe you should actually spend some time learning how computers actually fucking work" principle. For whoever coded up this wrongstrocity.

Using LibreOffice Draw + Chromium on Linux produces the same results.
Wow.

I had reason to do that sorta stuff about 15-20 years ago on a hobby project I had going.

Using LibreOffice Draw + Chromium on Linux produces the same results.
I have seen this before, when pasting from LibreOffice into an email (using kmail). I also just did this in the Booty topic.
-
Firefox and Draw / Inkscape did well on SVGs...
<!-- body,div,table,thead,tbody,tfoot,tr,th,td,p { font-family:"Liberation Sans"; font-size:x-small } --> broken clipboard test 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
... yeah, Calc + FF: broken
Edit: FF + Draw
Well, that's... passable

Bumping because this bug still exists.
Copying and pasting the text "hello" from OneNote desktop client (not the Windows10 client, important difference), and I suppose from any other MS Office program, into Opera, pastes:
Hello
(The image is corrupted! That's probably Office's fault though).
According to: http://madebyevan.com/clipboard-test/, the clipboard event is producing 3 "items": text/plain, text/html and image/png, and NodeBB is grabbing both the image/png and text/plain (but not text/html ).

(but not text/html ).
I think that by default nodebb doesn't allow html. At least, there's a setting in the markdown plugin (is it possible to run nodebb without that?) to explicitly allow it, with a big warning about doing so.
So it probably avoids that. Maybe it could be smarter to take the html if that's allowed.
-
@boomzilla said in Pasting from Excel:

Correct. @ben_lubar's sanitization plugin is the one doing the job of sanitizing instead of NodeBB, but the default is SANTIZE EVERYTHING OUT
-
@sloosecannon Yeah, that's what the markdown plugin does. I'm not sure what happens if you try to run nodebb without that, though. But I suspect the "avoid html" is basically hardcoded into the composer.
-
@boomzilla Or translate HTML to markdown, at least the basic tags like <i>
Yes, I know that's hard, but hey, they picked Markdown as the markup language knowing fully well that literally >99.999% of the content out there is in HTML, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
JIRA also fucks this up bigtime. If you're copypastaing from OneNote to a description/comment field in JIRA, it wants to upload the note as an attachment.
-

Yes, you can run NodeBB without the default plugins. Without the Markdown plugin, it just puts whatever HTML you post on the page a la Community Server.

@djls45 said in Pasting from Excel:
@Tsaukpaetra What's an Arizona room?
It's a semi-enclosed room, typically a porch that has been enclosed with walls and screens and had ceiling fans installed. They give you the feeling of being outdoors while keeping the bugs away and typically being a bit cooler than out in the direct sunlight. Some Arizona rooms can be completely closed up during cooler weather, turning the room into a cross between a greenhouse and a patio.
-
TIL that copying in Excel also grabs a screenshot of what you copied!

My sister's place has one of those, except they're in Utah so it was designed with the opposite goal in mind: keep out the snow!
