Stupid comments gallery

  • Hi all,

Don't you hate those stupid knows-it-all-1337-self-proclaimed-geek type comments on the front page stories? I know I do.

Here is the solution: make a gallery of these stupid comments!

If you spot any absurdly stupid comment post it here and comment on it.

    Let the fun begin <hehe>

  • It's not a bad idea, exactly, but it would mean actually reading the comments to front-page stories, and that's just too soul-destroying.

  • Sometimes, sometimes, I read the comments ("scan through", rather), and I suppose others do that too, so once in a while a gem might work its way up to this thread.

  • Anything by headshit, he said some stuff on one of the latest posts, I don't remember which one.

Well, he's in quite splendid form here:

  • That's why I've always hated anonymous forum posting.

Gizmodo (well, all of the Gawker sites I guess) has a nice system. Your first post has to pass through moderation, and after that if there are too many problems, they stage "public executions" and send people on their merry way with an IP ban.

Oh no!  I have to unplug my DSL modem to get a whole new IP?  How will I survive?

  • Well at least the next unsuspecting sap who gets your old IP will be banned.  I mean, that's gotta count for something, eh?

  • The intersection of the sets

    1: WTF reader

2: ISP X user on a specific area router

is unlikely to be greater than 1.

    no.

I don't think so. IMO it's a wrong assumption that WTF readers are equally distributed. It's likely that a reader personally knows some other readers (because one of them has told the others about WTF) and they might as well live or work in the same building.

Only if you unplug your modem long enough for someone else to get that IP assigned. Odds are greater that you'll be assigned the IP you've had previously, rather than a whole new one. Hence why I've had the same IP for over 2 years, and have rebooted my modem many many times.

I agree, at least with the ISP I have.  I've had the same IP address for a long time, and I've been rebooting my cable modem every hour for over two years. Data transfer information is stored on the modem and queried periodically, instead of being tracked solely through the ISP gateway. And it's an old modem that stores the data transfer rates in volatile memory -- yeah that was smart.  Now if only I had time to actually abuse the system...  I don't even come close to the transfer limits anymore.

  • Apparently it differs. My ISP, Deutsche Telekom changes the IP each time I log on, even if I didn't unplug my modem. Then again, they are selling "static IPs" as a special service with higher rates, so they might have extra-agressive policies on IP assigning to get more people to those offers...

Oh excuse me.  I was unaware that you knew more about what happens when I reboot my DSL modem.  Perhaps you spy on me when I do it and then run to my computer to check what IP I got from my ISP.  Perhaps you have hacked my computer and you send email alerts to yourself when my IP changes.  You must be pretty arrogant to think that I have not taken a single networking class in my life just because your ISP does not assign IP address the same as my ISP.

Just FYI, I've had my current IP for about 2 weeks.  I had the one before that for about 2 months.  If I restart my modem I have a fairly good chance of getting a new IP.

There are no rules for this, so that statement is a bit silly.

For example, I have a 100% chance of getting the same IP if I unplug my router, be it for 5 seconds or 5 months. It's a fixed IP (well, 8 6 of them). With my previous ISP, I'd get a pretty much random IP address from their range every time, and the ISP before that I must  have had about 3 IPs in the entire time I was with them.

  • I'm sorry, did I miss when this topic got renamed to Happy Flamewar Barbecue Party?

  • No, it's just that I found the irony of that kind of thing getting posted in this very thread amusing.

God forbid we use this method of communication to actually carry on a conversation that veers the slightest bit off course.  Do you really want a new thread every time someone thinks of something not directly related to the original post?

  • Maybe the guy who assigns you the IP was sick. Or the bingo machine where he gets his IP's from was broken!

  • I get disconnected and assigned a new IP every eight hours. Perfect for circumventing bans. ;-)
