Pandora WTF

  • You might know that Pandora ( www.pandora.com ), a great and free music exploring and listening site, excluded listeners outside the US of A since yesterday. I think they need to recheck their atlas...

I believe you have made a mistake, so apologize !

btw: I used an anonymising proxy, located in the US of A.

  • For those of us that can't pull images here at work, could you quote the pertinent text?

    what?

  • Shure thing:

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.

  • There's a story on digg about how to be a "hacker" and access Pandora from outside the US.  Evidently using a proxy qualifies as "l337" these days....

Pandora's probably blocking IPs of known proxies as a response.

  • My guess is his workplace blocks imageshack.

This is the Internet, and it ’s easy to be a hacker nowadays, so here’s a couple of services you can use to access Pandora from wherever you are

    This is called irony!

Well, it says 'most users outside of the U.S.' so maybe they're leaving things open for our neighbors to the north (after all, it's the honorable thing to do)

    Exactly!

Of course you can... Canada is just the 51st state...

  • Geolocation is a bitch, since it's mostly guesswork. Just email them and tell them "Hay u guyz maed a mistake" and maybe link to this post.

Their blog says Canada and the UK are safe.

I don't really get a move like this right now, given the legal pressure they're getting in the US as well.  I mean they have like...11 days until those asinine new royalty laws are going to force them out of business here too.  I guess they're hoping for a last minute change of heart.

    I believe they've been given a 60-day reprieve.

Quiet, you fool!  The last time we angered the Canadians, they burned down our White House!

  • The new royalty law is already in place. As of right now, many US-webcasters are broke... on paper. They've been given a 60 day reprieve because the copyright board is nice like that...
And hopefully that new 'webcasters equality act' will be in place before that. That'll give webcasters the same royalty fees as satellite radio has. Which much more fair.

(DWTF-goers from the USA, please go to savenetradio.org and see what you can do to help them)
