Deleting the first post in a topic would delete the topic (AIUI) so regular users aren't allowed to do it.
-
I figured... I mean
godDiscourse forbid users delete their own topics...Filed Under: For a forum with trustlevels there is very little actual trust in the users
-
'Deleting' a topic would also 'delete' any other users' posts.
-
The first half of my brain finds that reasonable (don't trust this one!)
The second half argues that my topic was empty and I was in the "ninja-edit"-period...
The third half wants to know what would happen to this forum if deleting ones topic was allowed and @mott555 were to delete the likes-topic!Filed Under: Is man not entitled to the deletion of his own topic?
-
The most sensible thing would be to allow deletion of the first post and promote the first child to be the new first post. Or something. I mean, it's not as if it's a new concept - Firefox Tree-Style Tabs:

You might want to page @Arantor.

They don’t care which post in a topic is the first post. They (soft-)delete the whole topic when its last remaining post is (soft-)deleted.
The real question is why Discourse doesn’t manage it.

Removed timer and moved to
Meta
.

relocated to Bug

the main topic was the testing of deleting and undeleting so I could find out if you broke stuff with the Show-raw button. You derailed the topic!
Also, I kinda just wanted to test whether or not a mere regular could change the actions of an admin.... and I was able to. Is that intended as well? (and more importantly in normal comunities is it desired?)

I'd imagine so. It's not an admin action, even if it's an admin performing it.
-
But isn't moving a topic considered an adminstrative task?
I know TL2 is not New User... but I feel like if I was an admin I felt a topic not appropriat in a category I would not want it there. And I would not want user XY (who is not manually elevated like mods, or staff ... or maybe even Tl4) to just change it back.Filed Under: Put yourself in PJHs shoes... or rather don't. I think he still needs them!
-
I think I agree with the point being made here. If an admin changes a category (or topic, or probably some other things) that's making a stronger statement than a TL3 or TL2 doing it. I'd expect them to at least have the option to then lock further changes to mod/admin, either for limited or unlimited time.
A point could be made that if a user engages in a category/topic title war with a mod/admin they should be trust-holed, but I don't think that should be the only option.
-
But isn't moving a topic considered an adminstrative task?
It's a TL3+ task in Discourse, so it's not like everyone can do it.
I think he still needs them!
How else would he get to the pub

This, I guess.
To be fair though it's not something I've noticed being abused here. Unlike title edits in some topics
-
lock further changes
As an aside, last I remember, a Regular can rename and probably move "locked" and "archived" topics.
So I'm thinking there might not be anything in place for an admin to make a topic unchangeable by Regulars while keeping it somewhere they can access it.

Meh, I still think my descision was justified. I mean, how maybe people posted in this topic while it was in meta? (Answer: 1: You), now that it is in bug, there are people participating!
Filed Under: I am totally not ignoring cause, effect and other relevant things here
that's what we do here.
I must be new here.
Filed Under: Am I doing it right? :D
Though, I always felt like bug and meta were also categories that "suffered" less from random topic changes.Btw. we never change the category depending on the current topic but always the OP, right?
-
Could someone shed some light on how 90s era PHP hellstew forums manage it?
Some of them replace the opening with [Post Deleted] and then you wander about going "WTF was this thread about?" when you find it from google search.
-
Btw. we never change the category depending on the current topic but always the OP, right?
Yet...
-
How else would he get to the pub
bare feet? I sure he would do it if there was no other option.
-
Yet...
.... if i recall /t/1000 did the grand tour through all our categories (atleast the ones that needed at most TL1 to see) a while back, because we could.
which reminds me there's a new category it hasn't visited yet.

What happens to the badges when you move the topic to a category that is restricted (like the Lounge) and leave it there for a DiscoDay?
Filed Under: Evil Ideas topic is over yonder, I know

hmmm.... dunno, but i'm curious.
you move it and let me know.

ah.... spoilsport.
-
Also the TL3-Lounge is too easy a target. Ask @boomzilla to move it into the TL4-plus lounge and complain that NO MOD EVER DOES THEIR JOB IN HERE if he refuses to do it.
Addendum: Ouch, typo
-
oh heck no!
i've already annoyed them enough this month and it's only the 1st!
-
I think you just need to move it into the normal Lounge for it to stop counting
Imagine how many badges would vanish if t/1000 got moved
-
-
no, not that. ;-)
-
Imagine how many badges would vanish if t/1000 got moved
Wouldn't it create more badges? This is not an invitation to move it.
-
Hmm...no, it's not hard coded any more, but has the magic UUID.

The arrows icon is hardcoded to the topic ID. Does that change on move?
-
The topic ID doesn't change when you move it to another category.
-
If it did that would be a hell of a way to abuse tl3 requirements....
-
I think you just need to move it into the normal Lounge for it to stop counting
But if it was moved in the TL3-category then every TL3-user could move it back. There are only a few active users in the TL4-plus group or however that is called. Therefore it has a higher chance of staying in that category for the duration of the test.
Wouldn't it create more badges?
Would Discourse be able to handle that? But as you said in a lower post, I think since the UUID is used we'd probably be save! Then again, Dis is Thiscourse!Filed Under: Did you see what I thid dere?
If it did that would be a hell of a way to abuse tl3 requirements....
But thats just on our instance. I don't think many forums hardcode stuff in their badge-queries.... hell, I find it impressive enough that @PJH did the whole badge-query to begin with.
-

It's because he's One Of Us. So he had fun with it.
-
That doesn't mean I don't find it impressive.
Filed Under: not even joking! | Also, am I included in "Us"? I had fun as well :D
-
That he and @accalia have collaborated to give us @shadowmod is really cool, too.
-
But thats just on our instance.
No. All of them. Changing the topic number would make all the pairs "new" and unread. And that affects TL3 requirements.
-
-
@riking told you about an easy way to get the data needed to test for TL3-requirements, right?
Did you already work on that? because I'd actually be interested in knowing when I will lose my status for not posting / reading / liking enough but I don't want to botherpeoplemods.Filed Under: Might remember wrong, though
