Yet another reason to Hate Firefox

  • In my usual daily browsing I came accross this site http://www.profit42.com/ , however upon entering I was immeditely redirected here http://www.profit42.com/browsererror.html , hmm apparently IE7 is an old internet browser, and since this site is using the latest scripting technologies, I need to use a "Next-Gen" internet browser and apparently IE7 is not next gen enough...

So i pop on Firefox and head to the site again, so i can finally check it out, and try to figure out why it could be breaking in IE7(knowing full well this is just to force ppl to download firefox and make some money for the host) and whats one of the first things I see???? A screenshot of someones desktop with the website loaded in IE7. and it appears to load perfectly ;)

Yep my hatred for firefox is growing stronger by the minute, I'm getting sick of these 1337est haXXors, who attempt to force firefox on you, using blatantly false advertising, so they can make money. These firefucks have got to stop!!

  • So some website blocks IE, and you blame Firefox for it. Sorry, I don't get it. Especially: How does one earn money with forcing people to download Firefox?

  • lol, my prob isnt exactly with firefox, although i do have some pet peeves with the product itself, however the problem here is with the generation of IE7 vs Firefox advertising that firefox and it's "elitist" users has generated.

Google Adsense pays $1.00 for every time someone downloads and installs Firefox through your website. so this form of advertising can generate a lot of cash if you have a lot of visitors using IE that do go on to download firefox. But I find this to be one of the worst form of advertising as it's prob one of the most intrusive forms and a complete and blatent lie. And the only product that is ever advertised, that I have come accroos, is of course Firefox

  • @Hitsuji said:

Hello and welcome to the browser wars, where retardedness, utter stupidity, intrusive tastelessness and 1997 are brand new again.

On the other hand, I can't quite understand why a dev would ever "hate" Firefox, apart from the fact that it sucks up memory like there's no tomorrow it's very clearly the best browser to develop for *, with Webkit (future Safari 3) in the second place, Opera 9 in the third and MSIE (6 & 7) and Safari 2.0 tied for last place "turd browser".

(*): It has the best tools by far, has the most extensive JS implementation, mostly the best error messages. Not the best CSS rendering by far (Opera 9 and Webkit both beat it), but it's very clearly the best browser overall

  • Yes, i do use it for dev only, but one of the main problems is that it has a habit of fixing/ingnoring broken HTML or other code, making it harder/impossible for me to find it to fix it myself.

  • Well in this case it seems kinda justified since the page seems to only block IE, it happily accepted me when I forged my browser identity to Mozilla 1.2.1, Netscape 3.01 or even Lynx 2.8.3. The default identity "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/3.5; Linux) KHTML/3.5.6 (like Gecko)" didn't offend it either.

Speaking of offend, I can't seem to login to the forums using Konqueror, the sign in "button" does nothing. So I had to load up my 32bit Firefox-bin to make this post.

  • Um... excuse me, but are you kind of retarded? You're abusing MSIE as a webbrowser, and those guys are so kind and nicely to hint you on your mistake, and you're complaining? Beside that, they have to assume you abused MSIE on more than just their system, and thus consider your system as compromised (and try to protect their webserver from you).

No-one forces you to use any special webbrowser. But please don't expect that they'd consider you as special because you're too stupid to differ a webbrowser from a trivially insecure ActiveX Rich Platform Client. If they website doesn't work in IE, then it's solely your fault, because you should be using a webbrowser.

    </rant>

  • Thanks for the unreasonable conspiracy-theory rave of the day.

    /me moves on

Huh, didn't know that. And that's quite a lot compared to what you usually earn with Adsense, I'd think. I wonder though, if Google is that pro-Firefox - why do they make their Toolbar for both? (Not that anyone would switch Browsers for a crappy Toolbar, but still..)

I don't get any of it... So what do you propose exactly to do when one hits BROKEN HTML? Reject showing it and alert user? Magically correct YOUR errors (you're the one using it for developing)? It's ignoring what it can't fix and fixes what it can.

Really - when you check your site with DOM Inspector everything is obvious, because you see exactly what has been interpreted and how.

So learn to use it and stop bitching that it doesn't do what you THINK OF. If anyone rejects FF it's their choice.
And you started topic named "Yet another reason to Hare Firefox" - I see only one meaning with that - don't try to change it.

PS. Sorry - just had to write it. Don't blame people for what they do, just because you don't like their ideas. You can stop using it if you want and lose what it provides. Get over it.

They don't care about the toolbar. This is about the default home page.

Yes, childish and stupid. But Microsoft and Google have been fighting over it for years.

Don't hate Firefox for these guys being jerks. Hate them for being jerks and refusing to even allow IE users to view thier webpage, thus eliminating a good 75% of potential hits to their site. If they're selling anything, even just advertising, they're losing out, period. Firefox is actually a pretty solid browser, and I'd use it if the Google toolbar wasn't better on IE.

  • I have to agree 100% with the OP on this one.  I'm getting sick and fucking tired of blatantly misleading and flat-out lying in Firefox advertisments.  Microsoft doesn't advertise IE with this type of smear campaign - if they even tried it, they'd be sued into obilivion.  So why can open-source projects get away with this sort of thing?  If you hide under the banner of openness and freedom, are you allowed to lie and decieve as much as you want?  If you claim you're acting in my best interest, can you get away with the most heinous crime against me?  People have been using this technique for thousands of years to moralize the most unthinkable crimes.  I thought we'd gotten past that, but I guess not.

I'm sure some conciencious open-source coder will write a virus that infects Windows-based systems, reformatting your hard drive and installing Linux.  And of course when it's done, it'll pop up a friendly message saying "Your operating system has been replaced for your own protection.  You'll love Linux because it's more secure*.  Trust us**."  Soon, as they always do, Microsoft will release a patch to fix the vulnerability that the virus was exploiting.  The entire open-source community will be up in arms.  They'll organize class-action lawsuits against Microsoft.  They'll send guirilla fighters to Microsoft HQ, cutting power lines and blowing up dams.  They'll riot in the streets, causing panic and destruction and destabilizing modern civilization as we know it.

    </rant>

But seriously, I'm with the OP on this one.  If you disagree with me about which web browser you want to use, then I have no problem with that.  But as soon as you try to forcefully change my opinion to match yours, then that's where it becomes a problem.  And as soon as money becomes involved****, then the problem becomes a lot bigger.

*By more secure, we mean nobody's been bothered to write a virus that targets our platform, since nobody*** uses it.  But if anyone wanted to try, we'd be more than happy to provide them with all of the source code so they can analyze it for possible vulnerabilities.  Aren't you glad we're such a positive community?
** P.S. Sorry about deleting all of your files and applications.  They were probably virus-infected anyway.  Besides, the OpenOffice file format is much more open than Word's, and several open-source applications that have been scientifically proven to be up to 47% as powerful as their commercial counterparts.
*** Nobody who matters, that is.  And we can make blanket statements like this because we're doing it under the banner of openness and freedom.  And everybody agrees with that, right?
**** Gee, thanks, Google.  Now look what you've done.

Only because Microsoft doesn't advertise IE as a product. They do advertise Windows with this type of smear campaign, they are sometimes sued, they usually lose, and they just pay the fine and carry right on making more campaigns the same way.

(The rest of your post is a series of straw-man constructs)

I have never actually seen a large-scale advertising campaign that was not a mixture of blatantly misleading statements and flat-out lies. You must find life extremely stressful if they bother you so much.

  • What advertising?

All "advertising" of FFS I see is those little buttons on people's websites. And I never see those anymore.

There are no billboards or newspaper ads (except the one) for Firefox. No spam about FFX. And I've never seen a banner or Adsense telling me to get FFX.

So, what advertising? Have I just been lucky in not travelling those parts of the web that neurotically promote FFX? Is it because I don't use other browsers that FFX promotion gets hidden from me?

  • @OP: wtf? never seen a site that only supports IE or so? They do exist, and they tell you the exact same thing, maybe without the patronization. Hah, now you know how it feels to be a victim of the browzer warz.

  • @Albatross said:

The only foss project i know of that get's blessed into the heavens are firefox and to some extend gentoo. Those products attract idiots for some reason that feel the need to tell everyone and there dog that they should be using product X because it's so much beter then M$

Also congratulations you actaully managed to get me annoyd by your troll rant.

  • I was tempted, long ago, to try out a Gentoo livecd.

But I knew I was still too stupid for linux, so I opted against it.

Only last night did I download Beatrix and plop it on a CD and had my very first linux experience.

Did wonder about Ubuntu after that.

But really, now that I have done a little Linux, I now wonder what I'm to do with it. I'd have to become an emulator expert because the applications I use and love don't have a Linux counterpart. I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble. I have similar feelings for the Macintosh.

But since I have two machines, I suppose can make it a merry and relaxed period of looking for Linux software.

Hardcore? Gentoo is like an undergrad bar. Noisy, full of itself, forever doing insane things, and avoided by all the locals.

If you want a "beginner-friendly" unix, go use macosx or something.

In my experience, games are less of a reason not to switch to Linux than you think.

    a) Games are not much of a problem if you have a dual-boot installation, like most switchers have.
Reason: You use games exclusively for a relatively long time (so the time to reboot doesn't hurt), and you don't have to cooperate with other programs (cut&paste, OLE etc.)

    b) There are ways to run many games for Windows on Linux (Cedega, CrossOver)

    c) For some attractive games (e.g. Quake1-4, Unreal Tournament 2003-2004, Neverwinternights 1) there are native Linux clients available.

At least the number of always active performance-sucking background programs is probably less on PC where Windows is used for games only.

Gentoo is kids stuff, it takes a lot of time to get anything done (although i believe they have pre-compiled packages now) and the user get's carried by hand trough the installation process, basically copy pasting commands from the manual. But the user get's to feel real technical for doing all that copy pasting. If you want hardcore go look at LFS.

Most people are sensible and take a distro that just works. Without fussing in config files or anything.

Ermm of course also pretty IMO

fix what? What's wrong with the folder structure.

As a user you've got your /home/<username>/ and with most recent distro's probably a ~/Desktop/ or ~/Documents/ or stuff like that.
    And there you have it.

In windows your files are all over the place, and i never seem to be able to find what i'm looking for.

    1% processing?

    how much memory? 1/8

I guess this can be optimized, but if I need to do something else that gaming, I just activate the stuff that I need.

    msconfig is your friend.

    Pshaw.

I prefer accurate, detailed tools like a mouse and keyboard rather than dinky little joysticks on a button-ridden, completely unholdable gamepad.

But I'm not really a passionate gamer. For example, if "playing time" is defined as the moment you first play it to the moment you finish it, then I've been playing GTA continuously since GTA 1.

And I've never finished one! Yay!

Huh? Finish??? There's actually a purpose to those GTA games? I had no idea... I just enable the infinite ammo & no cops cheats, and go on killing sprees.

No I'm not on any meds, why do you ask?

    Yea.

I did that for a while.

I even mapped some cheats to my text-expand tool so I could type in "/car" inside the game and PLOP a fast car in Vice City (real funny when typing a LOT in one go. You get situations straight out of Blues Brothers ^_^). Sad thing is that the tool made SA crash. And after a while I found the missions infinitely more interesting than just flurping about. I like to drive trucks, though. :) Truckin', Truckin'.

I'm still waiting, drooling a little, for HL2-EP2. I thought the point of "episodic content" was to deliver more quickly. It's been a almost year since EP1!

  • Wait, wait.

I thought you Computer Programmer folk were like:

"Computers are not meant for games!"

  • why would we say that?   computers are for everything!

  • Well, you know, opinions of non-gamers in IT.

And when I was 14 or something, I was at a mate playing some game.

The older nerdy brother of that mate came in and started complaining: "Computers are not meant for games!! You morons!!!". He then went to the other room and started programming BASIC or something like that on his Windows 3.11 machine.

  • lol, it was games that got me into programming, when i was 13 or so i started writing quiz games and higher/lower games in basic; Later on i switched to pascal and wrote pong, breakout and nibbles.

I still have fond memories of defining 1 til 9 in pascal as grafical lines, because i thought just putting a number would be ugly.  Which let me to the discovery of limiting the number of redraws to get higher FPS :) although at the time i didn't really thought of it as such.

/me dives into a few boxes where my old floppies lie to find those games.

  • I personally have always disliked firefox since the incarnation of mozilla called that. I used to use netscape on my macintosh (os7.6+) because IE was a steaming pile of poo. I'm almost forced to use firefox on linux, and it does decently there, but in a pinch i can do almost anything in lynx.

For windows, and especially 64 bit versions of windows.. ie7 x64 edition(or it's counterparts) is hands down the nicest browsing experience i've ever had. So what if everything is stolen. Opera and netscape had tabbed browsing long before IE, sure, but opera had to go insane and make it prefetch links on tabbed windows by DEFAULT (IIRC). Firefox's Windows Media Player extension and the flash plugins have NEVER, EVER worked for me. No matter what OS/platform i am on. IE works fine. yes, plugins may make your browsing experience "better", but all i really do on "the web" is read information. Sites like this. when i see a link i like, i middle mouse it and it goes in a new tab. All videos and sounds are paused by default, and i can't accidentally start them playing. i have to click twice to make them work (which i'll admit is hella slow on my 1ghz laptop... takes it a moment to realize i clicked to enable the control) which was slightly annoying at first, but makes myspace and its ilk a lot nicer to navigate.

Anytime i see someone using firefox i ask them why. the general answer is "got spyware with IE, so i switched"...

Funny... i barely run a virus scanner on my PC... i never get viruses, spyware, malware, popunders, popups, etc. I wonder if the crap people get are from the content of the website versus the browser you are using. (uh, stop going to 'FREE PORN CLICK HERE' sites)

BTW... i used deer park alpha 1 and 2 from the day they came out... mozilla doesn't care about its windows 64 bit users as much as the linux 64 bit users... why is that?

And please don't get me started on safari, opera, and the other no-name browsers out there.

i've yet to see a general website that says "looks best in safari" or anything remotely approaching that sort of statement.

And i agree with the person above about console games: the controllers are the main reason i do not buy/play them. my first gaming system was the Sega master system, and that controller was tiny. they've been getting progressively bigger, and still are as big of a pain to use. this is why i like the wii... too bad i haven't seen any games worth buying a wii for yet (not that there aren't any... i just haven't seen them).

with all of this being said: google's personalized home page is my favorite invention on the internet ever. that and hell.com, back when you used to be able to go somewhere on it.

  • I don't mean to sound mean, but you basically ruin your credibility (at least with me) about anything on the internet when you start talking about browsing myspace.

Actually, I had the playstation controller in mind, which I have always found unholdable. Played the PSP for a couple minutes and that was sort of okay, actually. But nothing really beats mouse+keyboard for accuracy. In fact, I was really amazed at how strangely simple targeting is in GTA:SA -- as if it was tested only on consoles and aiming is quite a bit harder using a gamepad.

  • I use Firefox for several reasons.  One, it had tabbed browsing before IE and has a better browsing experience over the joke IE5 was.  IE6 was better but no tabs unless you want some addon toolbar.  I don't want Google or someother toolbar just for something as simple as tabs and don't want any of the other crap that tends to come with them. Second, I can't run IE7 (at least at work) because it SAP doesn't like it.  None of the documentation or message windows work when you have IE7 installed - they are just empty. So between choosing IE6 without tabs and Firefox, I'll take Firefox any day of the week.

The only time I use IE is when I need to attach to SharePoint to do document management since it doesn't work with Firefox.

  • Indeed, the question should not be "Why did you switch to Firefox?", because the reasons for doing that a few years back are quite obvious. The question should be "Why should I move back to IE (now that they are finally 'up there')?".

  • you shouldn't.  There seem to be more websites that don't work with IE7 than with firefox.  Also IE7 doesn't even look like a normal windows application.  WTF is that about?

It's about Vista. In Vista, all MS applications look like that.

  • Why firefox? The plugins, plain and simple.

I use both FF and IE7 reguarly, but the default is FF because of the plugins and better tabbed browsing. It even makes up for FF's absolutely awful memory management.

Other than that, I see little between them.

  • @RayS said:

Specifically adblock and noscript. Also, session management. The download statusbar is good too, although I could live without it if I had to.

Tabbed browsing was the reason to use firefox three years ago. It has improved significantly since then, and IE7 remains several years behind.

It even makes up for FF's absolutely awful memory management.

Strictly, the memory management isn't awful - it's supposed to do that. It's just been configured by lunatics who think this behaviour is a good idea. Supposedly it can be reconfigured by the user, but in order to do that you would have to understand the code, and I for one will never be that desperate. I'd rather buy more memory than understand libnspr.
