Some people are really egotistical

  • This "Bug" was assigned to me the other day.

    Status:   Active
    Assigned To:    [Me]
    Category:   Bug
    Priority:   1 - ASAP

We need to global DB update to Middle Initial.  We need to add a period after the middle initial in the entire DB.  Please be sure to check if a period already exists.

Once this is done, please remove the period for "[Persons Name]".

I know this is a strange request, but because [Persons Name] is the only guy who doesnt want a period, we felt this was the best solution.

  • I don't want one either.

  • ...

  • I prefer apostrophes.

    Jeremy 'X' Llewiff

    Can you do that?

    Is that in there?

  • I hope you don't have a row for former president Harry S Truman in your database.  He doesn't get a period either.

  • Or does -- according to Wikipedia, Truman himself signed with a period after his second initial, but some sources don't use it.

  • Perhaps his middle name was only a single letter long?

  • So when you're in the business of Software Development, there is a big chance you just have to do Data entry???

    I am so naive...

Sadly yes. I have to do it if the client is to lazy to use the "we really need a CMS because we don't want to pay you for making changes"-CMS. Glad I found a new position...

  • CMS

Yet another overhyped product. The programmers who built the CMS always end up using it themselves.

  • On the data entry subject.

This greatly depends, there's data entry and date manipulation. The later being writing a update statement to change everyones middle innitial.

From my experience in the webshop where i work; I'm basically too expensive to do basic data entry, some intern should do that or someone else. However when big data changes have to happen. (like sorting a big list of items on alphabet, or a subset of products or whatever)  Then i will automate the process via a script or query or whatever.

However i find it highly unlikely any real IT person is going to be doing basic data entry.

Also there's the "Here's a spreadsheet, we want to import that into the database" kind of tasks, but again there's no way that means you have to type it.
Mostly it means you send it back a milion times until it actually looks like a spreadsheet. ( sigh people just don't know how to structure data i spreadsheets i guess)
Then you write some Excell/OOo macro me-thingy to create the data you want/need.
Then dump as csv and import into the database.

I like apostrophes too, but I was thinking more of

      Jeremy X' OR 1==1 ; drop table ; Llewiff

    myself...

  • My middle initial is

    T<backspace>

i.e. T followed by a backspace character.  Please implement ASAP.

  • I had never considered how much that "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" thing must have annoyed his bank etc. .... or did they just use "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince".....

  • I don't want a period either.  I've seen what they do to my girlfriend: it's a bit scary.

Take a unused glyph from all the font sets used at the bank, replace it with the "TAFKAP"  sign.

it's not going to be pretty, but it could be done :)

Yeah, but how would that fit into an alphabetical sort?

  • depends on which glyph is replaced :)

But i would guess either first or last.

The real problem would be for the online banking. It would be a real bitch to remember the unicode/ascii code combination to insert your name :)
