Poll: If PJH is willing and able, would you hide him behind an ellipsis?
-
Continuing the discussion from Poll: Show Raw:
?
.. well absent the icons that the rest of you don't normally see of course..
I almost wonder is we should consider the ellipsis1 approach that meta is using for the post icons. By adding the raw icon, regular users get 5 - 7 icons on a post, while TL4 and staff get 7 or 8.
So, if PJH is willing and able to implement this suggestion, which icon(s) would you be most willing to see behind an ellipsis? Since the point would be to get the greatest impact, I've limited the options to those icons that show for every user on every post.
- We don't need no stinkin' ellipsis!

1 For those unfamiliar with the ellipsis setup on meta, some of the icons are hidden behind an ellipsis icon, adding an extra step to get to some of the less frequently used icons.
In case you didn't get it by the massive number of options in the poll, this is a joke. Please direct all anger at
Jeffthe DiscoDevs.

<a long-ass list of options>
I'm full of admiration for you realizing that multiple-choice polls are Doing It Wrong and finding a suitably WTFy way to implement the functionality without breaking the principles.

Discourse allows multiple-choice polls now‽
I figured I might as well go all in. At least I didn't include all the icons. That would have been a HUGE list.

@PJH, do we finally have a contestant for this badge?

Oh dear - I'd need to SQLify that badge first... (and find where @dhromed acquired his....)
Though I think 'missing the point' is actually closer in this instance...

Maybe, but the other one is somewhat underrepresented.

Ta. I'll get onto that one tonight after I've been fed and watered..

This is another stupid idea that makes stuff harder to use. Jeff thinks he's like a fucking magician trying to force a card on you.
STOP MAKING SHIT HARDER TO USE BECAUSE YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE DOING IT WRONG.
-
I hadn't noticed this before, because I don't do much there, and it only seems to show up on my posts.
I can only guess that someone had problems accidentally deleting their own posts, so yet another global solution happened for a local problem.

Ummm, maybe I should put a disclaimer in the OP .

No, your post just got me thinking that maybe someone would miss that it's not a serious suggestion. Though I would hope the huge number of poll options would make that obvious.
-
Oh, I get it. I hadn't really thought that far. I was just...

WTF?
Why hide the icons?
The icons are designed so that they don't take up space so that you can maximize menu options visible.
Now they want to hide them.
I'm to the point where I can draw no other conclusion, other than, discourse has no idea how to design UI.
UI should be a separate damn degree in college, so people can't claim they know how to fucking do it just because they took a class in relational databases.

So the new UI in Discourse 1.whatever will be the Crysis hovermenu-thing?
-
I could just hide the whole lot (breaking the Show Raw).
Top two are expanded, rest aren't:

I could just hide the whole lot
And he shall rule them with an iron fist inside a velvet ellipsis.

i'd use it.
even more so it it implemented NNTP.
wasn't soneone working on a discourse plugin for that?

yeah that one!
hows @OffByOne doing on that anyway?

The first thing I do when installing Windows is turn off the feature that "collapses" unused Notification Area icons.
THAT SHOULD TELL YOU MY VOTE.
blakey whooshed, but I think the flaggers whooshed harder. -b

I think that someone was you.
Whoosh. Because everyone knows blakey don't Like.

I agree. Blakey was just voting without voting. Apparently, he also doesn't do polls.

Really? Do I need to point out the disclaimer? There's not even a hint that his rant was aimed at the discodevs. It seems to entirely be aimed at the idea as presented in the OP.
Here's the disclaimer again, just in case:

That disclaimer wasn't there when I read the OP. Maybe it wasn't there when Blakey read it, either.
(Actually, maybe it was, but I didn't pay attention to it because it's in such fine print. I dunno. Mostly I voted for the obviously correct answer, then skipped to the next post. Maybe you both whooshed. It might be funny to read Blakey's reaction if he did get a badge for it, though.)
-
Disclaimer's been there since just after this post:
Ummm, maybe I should put a disclaimer in the OP .
Which was minutes after the original version of the OP.

I think that someone was you.

One final point. From another topic:
Note that Abarker used the "font size 2" variant in his other poll and then says LOL I WHOOSHED BLAKEYRAT and basically that's annoying as shit, stop doing that. Not I'm not going to hit control-+ 47 times to read your shit. Go away.
Sounds like he whooshed and is pissed about the disclaimer being small.
-

Well, maybe he whooshed on his own joke, too. Be careful, you're whining more about a badge you haven't earned yet than @accalia does for those she did.

hmm... i'm thinking we can fix that statement...

I'm with @abarker, I'm thinking whoosh.
I'm sure @blakeyrant will be along soon to clear it all up in a calm, rational fashion.

It kinda sorta works (with some rough edges).
I was documenting and refactoring, but then Real Life interfered. I'm still in an eventful period, but hopefully in a month or so things will have calmed down and I'll be able to spend my spare time on DiscoNews again.

if so i'll flag @ben_lubar, @loopback0 , and @abarker for wooshing when the woosh flagged blakeyrat there.

@abarker already has two for his.
