Forum.www wtf

  • The sidebar on the front page for the recent posts in this forum is screwed up for me. It is writing the url wrong as forum.www.worsethanfailure.com instead of forum.worsethanfailure.com

    Which lead me to a different wtf.

    type in forums.www.worsethanfailure.com and youll see the page go in an loop adding forums. to the url until it reaches the max url length.

    http://forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.forums.www.worsethanfailure.com/forums/

  • hmm, either it's already fixed or it's browser dependant in some weird way. In any case forums.www.worsethanfailure.com loaded the front page fine for me, Tamper Data didn't report any http redirects either..
    While we're at it though, what's the meaning of those "Home" and "Forum" links at the top of the page where the one brings you to the forums and the other one brings you ... to the forums too?

  • i left out part of the url

    its http://forums.www.worsethanfailure.com/forums

    with forums at the end

    edit: and im using firefox. ie doesnt seem to do it

  • Aah, ok, seeing it now. Weird but somehow fun =)

    Weren't web browsers supposed to stop following redirects after the fifth time or so?

  • cool!  works for me.

  • Works in IE as well... I got it to hiccup on my end.

    (Using IE by force, not by choice.  Damn work requirements!)

    Seejay

  • Since www.worsethanfailure.com/forums redirects to forums.worsethanfailure.com, I'm guessing the redirect script is only seeing the www. and is doing some wierd string ops to get forums. on the front, which leads straight back to the same script. Why it apparently jumps through hoops in order to give inconsistent behaviour I have no idea.

  • Ahah, I love the url it gives.

    From now on, the forum should be nicknamed badger.

    Not necessarily. I could imagine the www is not processed by the redirect script but by the DNS resolving mechanism. Since there is no entry for "forums.forums.forums.....www.worsethanfailure.com", the default entry for "anything.www.worsethanfailure.com" is returned, the adress of the frontpage. But the browser still sends the original adress in the Host header from where it then gets copied into some "request uri" server variable.

    The redirect script however assumes that the only way to reach the page is via "worsethanfailure.com", thus blindly slaps a ".forums" in front of the server variable and hilarity ensues...

    Seconded!

  • (sorry for the double post, thank those stupid post permissions...)

    Check this: http://badgers.badgers.badgers.worsethanfailure.com/forums

  • Here's another infinitely-redirecting page I found once. If you go to http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0602/00166AD.PDF in Firefox, it keeps on adding /iis/misc to the middle of the URL until you end up with something like http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0602/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/iis/misc/default.asp. IE just gives a 404 straight away, though.

  • Yeah, it appears that the routing is something like this:

    forums.worsethanfailure.com => forums server
    anythingelse.worsethanfailure.com => main page server

    So when you try to get to the main page server's forums directory, it just redirects to forums.<main page server name>/forums
    But it does the redirect based upon whatever name you've typed in, wherein hilarity ensues.

  • Malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich malkovich....

  • We should start to keep track of how many WTFs come up in the forum software/server, (and document them too!)

  • what i got for all 3 listed links

    something is really screwed up there
