A *huge* bill

  • Garbage Person

Context: I cancelled last billing cycle.

  • I used to use e-trade for a company ESPP scheme in my old job. They still send me a paper statement every 3 months or so. My $0.04 balance there hasn't changed probably for the last five years...

    Verizon. Are you surprised?

I switched banks 3+ years ago. To this day, every 1st I get a notification in my email that a statement is ready for viewing. I used to call them and try to get it stopped, now I just make sure it ends up in my spam folder.

This is all in addition to the fact that when I closed my account, it was not properly closed and due to the low balance I incurred fees, that put me in to overdraft, that then got me collections letters...for an account that I had closed. That was a debacle to straighten out also.

As I was straightening that out, it was all traced back to the fact that I opened the account online and in order to open an account they required a deposit, so they put $5 in fictitious money in to my account. When I closed the account, there was still $5 that was there, and it wasn't, so their wonderful banking software did not know what to do.

Count the WTFs, they are numerous.

I have a Verizon WTF of my own, but it would take forever to type out.

  • Bank punished you for giving them fake money. duh.

By all reports, “Verizon” would be enough of a description.

Hmmmm, let me see if I can come up with an abridged version?

The WTF was actually with GTE, which became Verizon in ~2000. This was roughly 1997, I was fresh out of high school and for those who remember, cell phones were expensive at the time. It was over $100/month and you got fuck-all for included minutes. Overages were even worse. From here on, the numbers are as accurate as I can remember, but who knows how accurate that is...

I get a bill one time that had a 71 minute (I remember the quantity for certain) phone call, while roaming, during "peak hours" (remember those? That makes me feel old), that was supposedly made from my cell phone...to my cell phone. Roughly $4/minute, it was a close to $300 phone call that they were trying to bill me for, that I supposedly made...to myself.

I called customer service, and they were useless. Less than useless. I keep getting transferred up the food chain to try and get an explanation for this phone call that I know I did not make. I end up with some manager, and she was a real bitch. The kind you can tell as soon as they speak. I start to attempt to explain to her, who is like the 5th person I have talked to, and she cuts me off,

"You obviously made the phone call, now you have to pay the bill."

"The phone call is showing that it was made from my cell phone to my cell phone."

"I get that, but our system shows that you made the phone call, so now you have to pay the bill."

    "So...you are saying that I made a 71 minute phone call...to myself."

    • obnoxious, shitty, tone - "Apparently."

(at this point, I had enough) "Bitch, I have never been that lonely. Take that charge off the bill or you can go fuck off. I will send you payment for everything except that charge and you can cancel my account right now."

A few weeks (maybe over a month?) later I receive a phone call about my overdue (by the amount of the 71 minute phone call) account. I tell the nice woman on the other end what had happened, etc. She puts me on hold, comes back a few minutes later and wiped off the charge and gave me a month's credit for all the hassle. I explain to her that the month credit would be nice as ever since the exchange that phone had been sitting in my car's console powered off. IIRC she then made it two months.

As that was all about 18 years ago, my memory of it may not be the best, but that is as well as I can remember it.

  • Hold on, let me call you back as soon as I finish dialing myself...

    Wow. Somebody

    1. has no clue about customer service, and is just interested in power-tripping
    2. believes computers are utterly infallible and needs a lesson in bugs

    Feeling lonely?

  • Actually -- on my provider (Sprint) -- dialing your own number is how you access your voicemail, which is a rather nice place to put it.

  • When I try to call my own number, I always seem to get an engaged tone. I must be busy...

  • Wireless bill? I need to upgrade, all my bills are still wired.

Sometimes I will flag shit like that as phishing to encourage them to stop doing it.

And most phones defaulted to having voicemail on speed dial, which was not such a great place to put it. I once did spend 30 minutes pocket-dialing my voicemail, and it gladly obliged, ripping me off of quite a couple of bucks.

Yeah, well, that pretty much describes everyone working for a phone company. About the time @Polygeekery's story took place, I was talking to someone about the Baby Bells, NY Tel and NE Tel not having yet merged into NYNEX, and he said that when AT&T was broken up, they pulled all of the good people out of what would become the bells, into the parent company, and pushed all the idiots in the opposite direction. I figure, treating that story as if it were true explains all kinds of things.

I've had Sprint for almost two years, and I never knew that.

I can do that on AT&T too. Used to do it all the time on my old flip phone - once the 'you have voice mail' alert went away, I could never find the stupid button that dialed the "special" number.

This WTF is common to a lot of banks I've checked out, in both France and the US. It's amazing how little bankers know about arithmetic, if they don't even understand the concept of zero.

  • Banned

There are people who use voice mail? 0_o

  • I got an $0.08 phone bill one in the mail one time. (Probably from making a long-distance call on the phone in my dorm room or something like that.)

I sent it back with a note pointing out (not angrily) that between the paper, ink, postage, and data-entry for whoever had to receive my cheque for $0.08, they spent way more than $0.08.

There are a lot of things about Sprint that we may never come to know about...

One time when I was a teen my mom noticed a large charge for calling voicemail... which was supposed to be free on our plan. End result was apparently a number of accounts getting credits for a billing error going back about 6 months....
