"Go Faster, Crash Less"

  • Richard Branson's Vigin Media are advertising broadband with the slogan Go faster, crash less. Unfortunately, Richard Branson's Virgin Trains recently had a fatal train accident.

  • I actually joined up to reply to this (after reading without joining for a year) - not very WTFey at all, especially considering that if Virgin hadn't invested in the new, decent, rolling stock, the crash would have been seriously worse, with one survivor more likely than the one fatality.

Not sure why they went with that slogan, seems like a poorly thought out marketing campaign since connection speed obviously has nothing to do with computer stability...

But most users are idiots and won't understand that anyway ;)

I think it's a clever reference to the Virgin-Atlantic airline.

AOL, a while back, where running adverts on the tube which read: "Find what you're looking for faster with Google web search."

Hardly unique to AOL now, is it? Preying on the same clueless users.

Most users are ignorant, not stupid.  I hate seeing this type of elitism that demeans the people who are paying me to create a program they can use.  For most people, computers are simply a tool to get things done.  When writing a program, one of my objectives is to make the user's life as easy as possible.  I don't expect them to be as skilled in computer usage as I am.

EDIT:  yeah, I see the ;) which probably indicates tongue-in-cheek.  But I've seen too many people who honestly have this attitude.

  • There are some advertising slogans that are just plain wrong.

"What Happens In Vegas Stays In Vegas"  (I picture a very big city orphanage, or round-the-clock abortion clinics.)

McDonald's use of the song Mac the Knife, about a robber who kills his victims with his knife, to advertise hamburgers.  (The Kannonensong, also from Threepenny Opera, would have been more appropriate.)
