Encryption: Lets ban it, what can go wrong?
-
I live in a country that wants to ban encryption to protect freedom.
-
Jut saw this on BBC. It's an amazingly stupid idea.
do we want to allow a means of communication between people which we cannot read
Yes. Not just from the point of view of not wanting the government spying on me, but for secure logons to banking etc., including things like card transactions. It's the same knee jerk reaction that led to politicians trying to ban BBM in the wake of the London riots
Oh God, one of the comments on the Guardian article:
Can anyone explain why we have to encode our bank details? Surely it would be much simpler to catch thieves and put them in prison. Is it because banks are run by imbeciles and/or crooks?
I really really hope that's a troll

Banning encryption seems like perfectly feasible and useful measure. It's not like the evil people could surreptitiously download any of the thousands of encrypted messaging programs there are, or find some other way to hide their communications in the many terabytes of data that travel through the internet every day.
Sure, the guys in the Paris attack somehow managed to get AK-47 assault rifles, a shotgun, and an RPG launcher, but I'm sure there's no way they could have managed to sneak in a copy of GPG or Telegram for Android.

There is absolutely 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% chance of Cameron and his bumchums banning encryption.
This is just soundbites/clickbait/etc. in the run-up to the General Election; he's going after the 'OMG ALL MUZLMS IZ TERRISTS!' voters so thy don't vote UKIP or BNP.
-
It's just like the post riots bullshit. Say some stuff that means nothing, and would be impossible even if it got close to the point of being taken seriously, and know that the technophobic general public will lap it up. "Encryption? That sounds bad. Wouldn't want anything like that here"

When it comes down to govs vs visa int'l, I'd probably bet on visa.

Here's a few more things which could be banned in the interests of straightforward communication:
- Compression.
- Binary file formats.
- Unnecessary use of Unicode éntities.
- Use of metaphor.
- Sarcasm.
- Being mean to politicians.
My VISA card number is 1234 5678 90AB CDEF. I have nothing to hide and nothing to fear!

Also Discourse.
Fuck why are multiquotes not working now.

Y'know, the more I think about this, the more I fear Cameron may just be able to get away with it. After all, the Defence Of The Realm Act of 1914 banned invisible ink, kite flying, and buying binoculars. And bell-ringing.
And before anyone says 'Yeah, but WWI': how is enforcing draconian powers out of fear different between WWI and today?

Also Discourse.

Let's test, shall we?

Visa is only holding up because of their quasi-monopoly on payments. If a government developed a good, free payment system, forced all banks operating in the country to support it and gave it a lot of publicity, they could screw Visa significantly.
Of course, being a government, the chances of any advanced computer system developed by them actually being usable are very low.

And then Visa would sue.

I meant I can't easily make them on Firefox mobile. There's no quote button anywhere, selected text or not.

- Highlight and click reply, automatically quotes the highlighted text
- When selecting text on Android, I think the quote button only comes up if you move the end marker before the start one. No idea why

On mobile, the browser is immaterial. Basically, what you meant was:

Well, sometimes it comes up (at least for me) when selecting normally. Other times it comes up after posting the reply. In any case the reason is obvious: Discourse.

Having said that, multiquote is too much work even not on mobile for any other forum, so this is one place where Discurse is among the least wrong.

Sounds more likeStockholmDiscourse Syndrome to me... (EDIT: Thanks @abarker )TRWTF here is Discourse's mobile experience.
It is. While I understand that they can't put all editor buttons in such a tiny screen, having some kind of button to insert the post you are replying to would be welcome. Even inserting a quote by default would work...On phpBB you get a "Quote post" button on the topic page, and once you get to the reply editor you can see other posts below it and click the "Insert quote" button next to those posts. While it might be more presented in Flat Web 1.0 design, it does work even on mobile thanks to it's limited use of Javascript.

Maybe they could if the editor was in a separate page that allowed... wait for it... scrolling.
