Iron Man

  • Saw the movie this weekend.  I really enjoyed it.  Although I never read the comic when I was a kid - what with me being a girl and all :-D - I asked my hubby who was a comics fan for the rundown on Iron Man so that I didn't go into it thinking "what?  I don't understand this".

Anyway, it was good and actually self-explanatory.  I was able to appreciate the nuances via my husband, and enjoy the story for itself because it was a great movie.  Any fanboys here?

I don't recall any WTF's.  But I did note that if I owned personal robots, I would SO talk to them just like that!

Liar! There are no girls on the intertubez!

  • I thought it was one of the better comic book movies, but I can't rank it objectively because OMG IRON MAN!

  • I'm clueless about both the comic and the movie ... all I'm getting here is Black Sabbath

  • Yeah, me too until my husband gave me the back story.  They did roll the Sabbath song as the closing credits rolled, which was really cool.  Even if you don't do comics or know the character, if you like action movies go see this one.  It's really good.  (And coming from a chick, this means something!)

Surely It means something. Unfortunately, without my female speak dictionary, I wouldn't dare to guess what it really means.

You don't need the dictionary. It means take out the trash. That's what everything in female speak means.

I don't think so. Judging from my experience, females have approximately 10²³ different ways to say "It's all your fault", which may or may not also mean "so take out the trash".

Oh, I thought that was a given. If a woman doesn't think something is your fault, it's because she's never met you. And even then, it's not a guarantee that she doesn't blame you for something.

  •  s/something/everything/g

     suddenly it all makes sense

I recall a time my mother blamed me, personally, for a mass murder that had happend about 2000km away, while I was in my desk in elementary school learning about fractions. Apparently I should have known in advance, being a male and all, that this twerp would snap, get a gun, and blow away a bunch of females at a technical school.

So, yes, everything, everywhere, is your fault.

  • I AM IRON MAN

P.S. - I was turned to steel in the great magnetic field.

That is not your fault, that is because of violent movies like Iron Man! Duh! Your mother never told you that?

Both is true. It was MarcB's fault, and it was the fault of violent movies, and the fault of every male being in the universe too. When females put the whole blame on a male, it's not exclusive, though it's the whole blame.

  • One of my favorite sayings to tweak my husband: "if a man speaks in the forest and there's no woman around to hear him... is he still wrong?"

Actually, I just remembered a teensy tiny WTF in the movie. At the beginning, when he breaks out of the cave he's in his first rough iron suit with the open eyeholes. It was really pretty amazing that in the following gunfight not a single bullet managed to find an eyehole. Although if one did, there'd be no movie...

Really? That bugged you, but not the fact that he built a friggin suit of armor powered by an advanced generator better than any on the planet using metalworking technology from the 1800s?

How can you be so unsensitive? You ruined the whole movie. It's all your fault.

    Years and years of practice.

    That is amazing to you?

Did you not see the real life hollywood bank robbery/ensuing gunfight?

  • Not to mention how genius he was to build a suit with spare parts and a home-made forge inside a cave - a suit with huge flame throwers and rockets and what-all.... but forgot to include a parachute. DOH!

Jeez, you guys are getting me started. :-D

  • Where can I get the operating system Tony Stark used? I liked the theme.

It is not uncommon. Dutch soldiers in Afganistan and Iraq never hit anything, because if they do, they get court martialed.

I'm always bothered when inertia is ignored.   What's the point of having an undented suit when you've turned to goo inside?  But then I remind myself its just a flick.

How does inertia mean that you're turned into goo when bullets hit the armor?

The suit would be able to disperse the energy of the impact of a bullet, so that previous comment doesn't make much sense, however all the collisions would have turned iron mans innards to water....maybe that's what he meant.

If the suit absorbs the impact, then what is turning his innards to water? Am I speaking a different language here?!

Hey, physics is a tough concept! Give them a break.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

Possibly an allusion to what happens to the brains of boxers with time?

I mean, when you fall from high enough up and hit the ground hard - being in (even a interiorly padded) suit the impact will severally mess you up inside.  Internal organs in motion tend to stay in motion, retinas tend to become detached, etc.  At slow speeds its not an issue because its easy for the other 'stuff' in the body to push or slow down your innards with relatelty little stress. Just pulling negative gs in a fighter jet can cause red out where blood pools in your eyes beyond the pressure capacity of the blood vessels there to blow, for example.

But you are right that getting hit with a bullet wouldn't have any impact, unless it was a round from a tank that knocked you back 60 feet in under a second.

  • @BeenThere said:

Okay, this is what I was trying to get at. I thought you were saying the impact of the bullets would kill him. If we're talking about the fall, you'll get no major arguments from me.

Well, if you ask nicely, then everybody who disagrees with me is wrong because I'm right and you all suck!

    Oh.

  • Anyone get a good look at the code that flashed up on that pissy screen in the cave when he was initializing the steampunk suit for the first time? I caught a glimpse of one nugget, and it went something like:

    unsigned char array = { 26, 25, 46, 67, 99,

                              55, 67, 99, 99, 10} ;

Of course, that looks more like actual source code than traditional output. Since this site had a screenshot of the "Replicator Code" from the newest Stargate film, I expected someone may have at least used a screener to see what faux-code they threw up during Iron Man.

  • I'll just take out the trash, or whatever.
