Wow, I'm impressed (Samsung+Android)

Reading some articles to get up to date on the current state of smartphones...
Samsung supported a phone for a whole 18 months? That's amazing!
-
Yeah, I have the GS3, and have had KitKat for a while.

Still better than almost every other Android phone maker (the exception being the Nexus devices; Google controls those updates).

What, some manufacturers push updates? Ho ho ho…
-
Some even push music.

I'm still waiting for the supposed update to L for the MotoG.

Me too but as far as I can see on the Motorola website the update has been made available and we're now waiting on operators.

I wasn't really expecting Lollipop on Nexus 4 due to this reason but I have it!
-
The Nexus 4 seems to have done better than previous Nexus devices. I don't remember the Nexus One or Galaxy Nexus (which I still have somewhere) being supported for as long.

It's because it is still quite capable. 2GB RAM etc. Really the only thing it is missing is LTE (which my plan doesn't include anyway)
-
Yeah but KitKit's minimum memory requirement is 512MB and the Galaxy Nexus has 1GB and the last update it got officially was Jelly Bean at 18 months after release.
-
Mine is free (libre) but not 4G (1st generation) so it's not available yet.

Can you imagine "I see on the Lenovo website the update to Windows 8.1 has been made available for my ThinkPad, I'm just waiting on my ISP now"?

Apparently, we're all old fogies for not having S5s.

Samsung Galaxy S5: because you haven't owned any of the prior versions

Didn't something like that happen with WP8.1 updates?

Not really; any delays to WP updates are normally down to the manufacturers, not the networks.
-
likewise for android...
and the fact that manufacturers love to underspec low to mid end android phones so upgrading them slows them down to being slower than mollasses flowing uphill on a -40 degree (either scale) day in Boston, MA
-
For HTC and Samsung (and maybe others) it's a bit of both, as there are carrier specific versions so once Samsung have bothered the carriers still need to do something. That's why I tend to swap mine from carrier-specific to the generic UK firmware as that removes some of the gap.
-
That's one of the good things about Windows Phones: no-one makes carrier-specific versions. But then, there's only one manufacturer (of note), and that's [s]Nokia[/s] Microsoft. Unless HTC are still making that 8X or whatever it's called.
-
My current Windows Phone is a Samsung, and my previous one was an HTC...
There isn't much carrier-specific stuff, just a few extra manufacturer-specific apps which show up in the Store. None of them are really worth anything.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think only the more powerful S3 models got a KitKat update. My 9305 with 2GB RAM did, and AFAIR 9300 with 1GB didn't. It's still a lot of lifetime when it comes to cellphones, but then again, it's still a fairly powerful model (even though battery life is utter shit).
-
According to Sammobile the I9305 got 4.4.4 in Poland and Germany, otherwise was on 4.3 like the I9300.
