    ANY TAKERS????

  • No can do. Out of printer paper.

  • Who doesn't want to work for free after they get home from their regular full time job, in the hope of eventually maybe getting a share of the profits from a startup website? Pretty sure this is the kind of opportunity all those vastly experienced people have just been waiting for.

    After all, what's not to love about a job where:

    • the job description basically has you do everything, and you have to be willing to do any other type of work they forgot to put in the job description
    • the job description pretty much says "hey, instead of having a social life, how would you like to do some extra work for free instead?"
    • you have to be available for meetings on demand
    • the client basically says upfront that they're going to be endlessly picky and make you redo everything over and over and over
    • and you'll have to work with a team of people scattered across the globe who are so incapable of finding a proper job that they're willing to sign up to this one for $10.

    As for me, well, sadly I don't have a webcam...

  • Where do you find this shit?

  • @Scarlet_Manuka said:

    you have to be available for meetings on demand

    That is the one that makes this seem like a prank ad as they also say you need some other full time job but don't give times when you need to be available. I mean it could be trying to scam work out of someone, but with the other requirements you'd think they would be trying harder.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    pittsburgh.craigslist.org

  • Do you mean "why were you looking at work on craigslist for Pittsburgh?" Or did you not read far enough to see the link?

  • Feels like the Nigerian scammers. Anyone smart enough to see that this is stupid in 0.2 seconds is immediately screened out, leaving the bottom 2 percent.

    That's per hour right?

  • Putting yourself in the ad-poster's shoes, would you really want the type of person who is clever enough to respond to be actually working for you?

  • "Must have thick skin: Not easily offended, accept constructive criticism, and a blunt/to-the-point tones. Don't apply if you're thin skin."

    Terrific. I wonder what they plan on saying to their "employees"?

    Calculating the hourly wage is left as an exercise to the reader.

    It's nice how they wave those two million in front of your face instead of doing the math and making it "max $60k/year", which is not even an offer that tempting. And it's not only "up to" 2 million depending on the profit, it's also "up to" 3% (depending, by the wording, on the contract).

    Also, putting in 25% more work gives you a (potential) 11% salary increase.

    Let's see, I have an 8-hour a day job, add 1 hour to commute, then 5 hours of this. That's 14 hours in total. Four days a week. For six years.

    It's like a bad Capitalist America joke.

    @mark_bowytz said:

    I have an experience with database architect, I slept with our DBA once. (Okay, I didn't).

    Anyway, the list includes, but is not limited to, 10 years of solid experience + Bachelor's, being a Technical Manager, Senior Architect Expert (or at least Professional, we'll settle on that), and fucking Photoshop.

    Jesus. If it was a gig aimed at college kids who don't know better, it would maybe make sense, but someone with 10 years experience and this very particular set of skills won't even bat an eye on an uncertain $60k.

    Oh I can do attitude very well. Fuck you people.

    @mark_bowytz said:

    Complete deadlines under pressure

    ...this is a joke, isn't it? I mean, scratch the wage, scratch the work hours, but they're basically admitting they're as pointy haired as it gets and you're to be at their whim.

    @mark_bowytz said:

    So, "Make us a new Facebook". With a (single) fellow web developer. In a year.

    @mark_bowytz said:

    Why does it have to be "great quality"? Are you going to adore my handsome face, or what? Because if I were to be working from home, that could backfire a lot.

    @mark_bowytz said:

    Yes.

    In short, it's another of those "we'll pay you millions when we take off" tricks, except instead of paying millions, they pay you $60k per year. And that's just sad.

  • I was on the fence, but when you put it that way, SOLD!

  • @Maciejasjmj said:

    "max $60k/year"

    How did you get $60k/year? "Up to 2MM" for 6 years would be up to $300k. What did I miss?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    @dkf said:

    That's per hour right?

    No. It's a single token payment from the looks of it.

  • Agreed. It was not $10 per hour but just $10 one-time payment.
    Up to $2m is assuming the company profits (can't math) ~60m? Probably has a clause excluding VC from income ;)

  • kills Dumbledore

    Guessing he took it as 3% of company profits up to a cap of the company making $2M. That works out at $66.67K

    The 3% bit, presumably.

  • Banned

    Also, how many companies have profit of even $1M in their first year? Profit, not income.

  • Ah, then he misunderstood. "Max 3% annual business profits up to capped $2,000,000" means, in every context I've ever seen, that you get the least of either 3% or the cap. As Nprz said, up to $66MM profit you make 3%, $66MM and up you get the cap of $2MM.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    I'd read it as a 3% of a maximum of $2M, rather than the 3% itself being a maximum of $2M.

    Hmmm.

  • Banned

    Either way, it means working for mere 3% of profit of a startup company. Again - profit, not income; and in first years, companies tend to invest alot.

  • Oh but wait. There's more.

    "Software development for Bitcoin ATM machine"

    http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cpg/4809460686.html

  • I saw an article on those. Sounds legit and totally not like a ripoff from a scam company.

    Die! Damn you, die!

    Damn. Can't emphasise that enough. Illiterate scams are worse than ordinary scams…

  • kills Dumbledore

    Illiterate scams represent a better value proposition to the scammer. The idea is to rope in the most gullible people by including stuff that will raise a red flag for anyone with a hint of skepticism. There's a MS white paper on the phenomenon.

  • Yep, that's why after 20 years those Nigerian prince haven't learnt proper English, they want to filter literate people out because it would cost them more and far more risky.

    I don't care. If they're begging someone to take part in some dubious scheme, they could at least not fuck the grammar up in basic ways. It'd be almost worth responding to the ad just so you can take up their time mocking their poor english skills. But don't do it for more than a few minutes; you don't want to spend more than $10-worth of time on it. ;)

    Assume the best-case scenario is yelling at you for any mistake, no matter how trivial.

  • But the best thing about those Nigerian Princes is that the last monarch of Nigeria was Queen Elizabeth II, so apparently all these spam mails are coming from... Prince Charles?

  • kills Dumbledore

  • Probably freelancer.com

    No, they are actually scamming the literate people too. They intentionally use incorrect grammar to make themselves sound stupid. Lots of otherwise smart people have been sucked into the maelstrom by thinking that they are smarter than the scammer. You start with the idea of "I just want to play with these guys and mock their English skills," but then they can really start to work on you and construct a story that you can believe. Like any high-dollar sales organization, once you start talking to the real salesmen you are talking to someone smart enough to earn $600k/year just by talking to customers and I'm sure that they can be extremely persuasive.

    There are probably universities in Nigeria that teach this stuff. They've certainly advanced the science of deception to a very high level.

  • @Qwerty said:

    Eh, I wouldn't say so.

    They just are stupid.

    If those are their examples of complex user interfaces, I want to know what their idea of a simple user interface is. Maybe Notepad?
