Interesting web coding

  • Take a look at the Saugerties Police Department (http://www.saugertiespd.com/) website.   Not seeing anything in Firefox?  Now, look at the page source.

Yes, that's right.  Their website is entirely in VML.  And by the looks of it, it seems to be a Word document.

  • OH.. MY.. F'ING.. GOD! That is made of 100% pure FAIL.

  • Turns out that, surprisingly, you get a half-assed render in Safari: http://omploader.org/vaGlh/Picture 1.png

  • Made me kinda sad.

     Poor guys.

The police car .gifs and cartoons made me hold my tears.

What's wrong with installing Drupal or something? What a waste of time and energy.

  • Whatever you do, don't open it in IE. It's like 1996 all over again, only with gradients.

That is just sick. I originally viewed it in Opera, which resulted in a gray background with really long scrollbars. Here it is for those who can't use IE:

    100% FAIL!

  • For fun: what does it look like in today's browsers?

    http://browsershots.org/http://www.saugertiespd.com/

    Eww.

  •

    style='position:absolute;left:106669224; top:89230268;width:1600200;height:32003
That would explain why holding down the PgDn key for about 13 seconds makes the scrollbar slider move by one pixel.  Doesn't explain the reason for using those particular numbers though.

  • Wow, this is the first I've ever heard of VML. I was kind of hoping you meant to say VRML.

Ah, VRML... fun to browse, mind-numbingly dull to code. Btw that site screwed up firefox. I had to kill it from the task bar. Not bad for a pidgeon crap of a web site.

Quite possible that it's a Publisher file. This is why I point people in the other direction when I hear they're trying to use Publisher for a website - sure, if you try really hard and follow all the advice you can make a website that is cross-browser compatible and reasonably good-looking, but it's a lot easier to do so in a program that doesn't have a WordArt button.

    Eww.

This (browsershots.org) is one of teh COOLEST sites I have ever seen.  Amazing, fantastic!  Thanks for the hookup.

I had no problems with FF2.0.0.7, with no noticable slowdown or lag.

  • Interesting... Looks like that site was made in 1996 and left alone for a while.

I am willing to bet someone can re-write that in a decent CMS in about 2 hours. My god this is the police department, not some mom-and-pop shop operating with 50 year old computers (then again with PD funding these days I would not be surprised if they converted a NES into a file server)
