I think it's time that we add a badge... the pendantic badges, and the spellar badges, but there seems to be another category of users that desperately need a badge of their own.
to that end i recommend creating a series of badges, culminating with the coveted (by some very weird people) Asbestos Cork Award
What does TheDailyWTF community think? good idea? bad idea?
- Why don't we have this badge already?
- That sounds like a good idea... maybe?
- What a stupid idea for a badge!
- TDEMSYR
- BADGER_NOT_FOUND!

Did you just find a new bug or intentionally make the link not work unless you Right Click -> Open in New Tab. Granted I'm using Firefox and I hear I may be Doing it Wrong.
Edit: Oh boy! Apprently using:

Will show up in the preview pane with the Trademark logo but not the rendered output! I clearly shouldn't be allowed to use Forum software.

I didn't do anything other than build a
<a href="">stuff</a>
inside a[<nbsp>quote][<nbsp>/quote]
section. Then again the behaviour of stuff inside quotes seems incomprehensible to me, so that's probably what did it...I did find out that you can paste generated entites out of the preview into your post where they will Actually Work™, but yah, that also seems like madness to me.

Nah, just ask @discoursebot what happened.

Seconded.
And select-quoting is still messed up on WinPhone...

Who cares about badges on discourse?
Unlike the badges on Stack Overflow, you don't see them next to your avatar. You have to dig through some menu and then they look kind of crappy and unimportant. There's no great incentive to chase after them. And then there's the "Likes" thread, that makes most of them meaningless anyway.
For all the talk about gamification, this forum is actually severely under-gamified.
-
Isn't the Likes thread excluded from a lot of the badge checks though?
-
Every time I get congratulated on a "Nice post!" badge, I click on it and end up on a page with a few hundred daily "nice post" badges that have been automatically awarded to every post in the likes thread.
"Errr.... thanks, I feel really special, I guess..."
-
Oh look, usercards are broken.
They swap the three lines of custom text between users under certain conditions:
Compare:
But yeah, badges get shown on the usercard and you can also set a usercard badge which makes a huge icon appear in the lower right.
-
Compare with stack overflow:
Every time they show a user, they attach the reputation score and badge counts for each category. Now that's gamification. This here is crap.
-
Onyx' userscripts fix that:
As you can see, I'm clearly a lot more awesome than you.
-
Well, we can't all be shallow gamification whores. < sniff > At least I understand this forum is about people and human interaction, not some empty virtual awards. < sniff > Leave me alone!

Maybe we could... stop spamming likes in the likes thread. Turn it into the random thoughts thread.

Maybe we could... stop spamming likes in the likes thread.
But the Likes thread is intended specifically to spam likes, to see if it breaks Discourse.
@anonymous234 said:Turn it into the random thoughts thread.
That's every thread on the forum eventually. Except those in One Post, as they're auto-locked before it degenerates

Of all the bios in all of Discourse, I end up with @accalia's
hmm. eversince discourse started cutting off te last line of my bio the remaining text really applies to so many different people here. ;-)
-
he's one of the three i had in mind.
Him, blakey, and... please don't say the third is me...
-
But the Likes thread is intended specifically to spam likes, to see if it breaks Discourse.
And it's had at least 600k likes and it's still not broken. How many more do we need?

As many as needed until it breaks
There's nothing to stop it being excluded from 'Likes' badges...

Almost everything, but I am.
-

It is excluded from the site specific Like badges. I can't edit the originals though (hence the second set) and disabling the originals completely would probably cause a riot for whom such things matter.
-
Him, blakey, and... please don't say the third is me...
Naaah.
three
Three? Damn, this forum really ain't what it used to be...
-
Him, blakey, and... please don't say the third is me...
oddly no, you aren't on the list of three... maybe i should make it four... ;-)
-
Three? Damn, this forum really ain't what it used to be...
well to start with.
i mean nagesh is gone, and so is morbs... they left a high bar to top....

I'll stop posting pictures of foxes if you do

three it is then!

Foxes thread is elsewhere

Flagged for excessive foxes.

One could argue that anyone who deserves the badge should already have been banned. (Is it even possible to ban @codinghorror?)
-
People already fish with dynamite for the pedantic dickweed badges, do we really want badges to encourage "flamers"?
-
Not everyone is a flamer all the time. ;-)
-
-
-
Can I get my medal from someone else, though? John Wayne, maybe, or Mal from Serenity, or even Tricia Helfer?

i found a metal for you!

I found a better metal:

Just remember: you can't kill the metal, the metal will live on.

Geez, ya coulda sprung for tungsten or something
-
Not everyone is a flamer all the time. ;-)
True, but if their annoyances to the community far outweigh their contributions, with little or no apparent willingness to change, you could make the case that they should be banned anyway, even if they aren't flaming all the time.
-
well, now there's an argument.
I'll make no secret of the fact that i believe this community would be improved for the better by a significant amount if the individuals i have in mind as potential recipients of the asbestos cork award were no longer to be part of the community.
But they want to be a part of this community, and i'm not going to be the one that takes that from them. I trust @PJH would remove them if they stepped over that line in the sand.
Honestly I'm far more likely to just say goodbye to the community as a whole than to try and force another to leave.
That being said I think it would be nice to have a recognized badge that could be handed out that said "Dude/Dudette (delete whichever is inappropriate) you are being an asshole and we want you to stop that."
-
you are being an asshole and we want you to stop that
Isn't that the dickweedery badge?
More seriously, though...
@accalia said:That being said I think it would be nice to have a recognized badge that could be handed out that said "Dude/Dudette (delete whichever is inappropriate) you are being an asshole and we want you to stop that."
This is the scenario which probably requires actual moderation. I don't think anyone here is consistently so bad they'd be the recipient of such a badge without getting some kind of warning from @PJH or @boomzilla.
