Can none of these people use punctuation

  • The other month I had ordered some computer parts by mail order but the company from which I ordered forgot to ship my items in time for next day delivery, so while I was wondering when the delivery van would arrive driven by a man who would only wait ten seconds before deciding nobody is at home today, this happened to me:

At first I thought the error was an incorrect description, but alas, the only message I could send was something like: "Hi I would like to know between what times my parcel will be delivered Its scheduled delivery date was today will it still arrive today or is it going to arrive tomorrow Its currently 1800hours so i wonder what the cutoff time is since this is a residential destination Also out of interest how long does the web tracker lag behind actual events"

I suppose it could have been worse. * Must be upper case only, * Must address recipient as 'dood', * Contact name must contain the same number of digits as letters.

It was also one of those sites where they hide any useful information so I'm quite certain a web spider would encounter the answer to my question.

  • Haven't you seen the interweb recently? Punctuation, spelling, using capitals for anything other than shouting or 1337 5P34K, and paragraph structure are all long-forgotten ideas.

You're supposed to write something like "OMFG YOU FING N00BZ WAREZ MI PARSEL1111111"

  • Probably the result of a lazy web developer trying to avoid XSS/SQL Injection vulnerabilities. Did you tell them about it in the message? If they're competent they'll appreciate the feedback, although that's a big "if" in this case.

  • What an outrage If I werent able to use punctuation I dont know what Id do do you

  • Re: Can none of these people use punctuation?

Why didn't you use a question mark in your subject?  That form must have given you a bad habit.

  • That was intentional. Maybe I should've picked a phrase that needed more punctuation. I imagined them sitting there reading through message after message with not one punctuation mark.

As for letting them know, I went round and round with that form several times and I can no longer remember whether the actual version I sent mentioned anything about it. I'd like to have done, but I have a feeling I added it only to take it out again. I'd stressed myself out a lot waiting for it to arrive.

Edit: My guess as to what caused it was that the form field was accidentally given the wrong validation parameters.

  • Maybe the company receives your comment by means of telegram STOP Then perhaps the form posts to a telegraph office STOP So to save money they do not want you to use special characters STOP Special characters cost extra STOP I knew I could figure this out STOP

  • WHAT PARALLEL UNIVERSE DO YOU COME FROM WHERE TELEGRAMS CAN CONTAIN LOWER CASE LETTERS QUERY

The HTML OPENBRACKET Hyper Telegram Markup Language CLOSEBRACKET specification was actually finalised last year COMMA and allows for capitals COMMA but they unfortunately forgot to add punctuation STOP

This made me laugh so much I almost choked on my lunch, and then had to attempt to explain it to my co-workers. Thank you :D

     Or should I say

  • Did you try disabling javascript?  I find that places that are dumb enough to do that kind of validation are also dumb enough to not do it on the server, so disabling javascript allows me to go ahead and post the data I want to.

  • I'm such a smarta$$, that I would have sent them the message formatted as:

"Hi period I would like to know between what times my parcel will be delivered question mark Its scheduled delivery date was today dash will it still arrive today or is it going to arrive tomorrow question mark It's currently 1800 hours so I wonder what the cutoff time is since this is a residential destination period Also out of interest comma how long does the web tracker lag behind actual events question mark"

Of course knowing my luck with web forms, they'd also have a silly word limit of like 100 characters...
