Myspace wtf

  • -12 ratings for Professor Abbott :-) So how can something like that happen?

  • The real WTF is that you think everyone uses Myspace and knows what the hell you're talking about.

Since someone talked about myspace, social networking stuff and the such: I use Orkut (a MySpace-ish thingie from Google), which is a large WTF in itself:

    - Runs on an overloaded Windows 2003 server (it was designed to handle a few thousand users, not 44 million, I guess).

    - You can get "You are connected to <some random number> friends through 0 friends" if you create a new account.

    - You can get bizarre stuff, such as a message with -7 replies.

And a few other WTF's that I don't remember now.

  • To be honest, you can just say "MySpace.  WTF." and we can probably fill in the blanks for ourselves.

I don't even use MySpace but I know enough about the average people who do to be able to preemptively give any MySpace story a WTF tag.  Obnoxious embedded music, red text on a light-red background (or a tiled background photo), people with 1000+ "friends" (how many of those do you actually know, really?) and stupid memes have made me hate every single misdirected visit to someone's MySpace that I've had the misfortune to experience.

  • The real WTF is that my screenshot disappeared. That would have explained everything. Except that, yes myspace itself is a wtf.

  • And then my original question was: How do you get -12 for a simple review counter.

Does it all make sense now?

  • This thread should probably just have the above subject line with an empty body.

Probably uses the same code as the voting machines from the 2004 elections.

  • My guess is database integrity and race condition ( in a slow application, a race condition is very likely to happen indeed )

Imagine a user could cancel his vote. This action triggers a script that :

    - check if the user has voted

    - <process heavy stuff>

    - decrement vote count

    - <process heavy stuff >

    - unflag the user has having voted.

Now imagine if you repeatedly refresh on the page that cancels the vote, and simultaneously, 5 or 10 scripts check if the very same user has voted for the same person. As the flag is not yet changed, the condition is true for all the scripts. And then all decrementations happen and lead to a negative vote count ...

  • Myspace is a WTF, due to abuse.

Because of this, just the word Myspace instills fear in the hearts of every boss, parent, and politician.

My initial reaction to the thread title was, "Why, yes. Yes it is."

  • EDIT: deleted .. I just realized what this page was really showing. :)

  • "Myspace WTF" sounds like a redundancy.

  • Not a real WTF, he was just "degraded" 12 times.

Happens a lot to teachers ;)
