UK Flight Control Software
-
So apparently the UK had to close parts of its airspace to commercial flights today due to software failures. And the problem is likely to be repeated because they are still using software from the 1960s.
Really, you guys?

So, blame your parents? ;)

We don't need ATC as everyone comes into the UK in the back of a lorry anyway.

“Britain is now the only country that is using the 1960s software. It is due to be replaced with a new system from a Spanish company in about two years, but until then they will just have to manage.”
Emphasis mine, They pay developers peanuts in Spain (why most of them flock to Gibraltar for Jobs, not because I think all Spanish devs are crap).

Hmmmmm. Never seen that one of George Takai. I too am disappoint.

Until a couple years ago, US air traffic control wasn't much more sophisticated. Of course we finally did roll-out the replacement, so I guess we still have the UK beat.
-
not because I think all Spanish devs are crap
They're about as good or bad as nearly anywhere else. There are some firms there that I won't work with, but others are no problem at all. (Others are a mixed bag; you're OK provided you can get the good people. But that's true of so many places…)

Indeed. For many years the unofficial advice when going to a conference in the US was: don't fly Delta, because their US hub is Atlanta, and with their ATC software from the sixties accidents are avoided based on pilot reflexes and little else.

don't fly Delta, because their US hub is Atlanta
These days that advice doesn't apply. You can fly through Detroit, which used to be the NWA main hub. (The airport at Detroit's fine; it's not in Detroit after all…)

Hanzo'd.

Though they operated a lot more out of DTW than out of MSP. (I miss changing at MEM. That was quite a nice hub to enter the US via, but it must've been too close to ATL…)

It is due to be replaced with a new system from a Spanish company in about two years
I hope it won't be developed to Spanish ATC standards. Spanish ATC has pretty bad reputation. They apparently had some organizational problems and I am not sure whether they fixed them already.
