The annoyances thread (or a new one if there's already one)

700 megs for a generic optional update? Curious, I clicked the More Information. It turns out this basically is a service pack, but they aren't calling it that. It's a rollup of all patches up to this point, and it's received the kind of testing an SP normally gets, but it doesn't include any API changes so they're not calling it an SP.
-
It actually comes with a rip of the leaked The Interview movie.
Thanks, DPRK

Another one:
Why, @codinghorror, why?!
Also, while you're here, why is it I can't paste a picture into IE? Is that IE, Discourse, or something else?

no, no no... not me. frostcat!

Hush. Other than the fact that nobody will build a good adblocking extension, IE11 works pretty well. The main issue is that its javascript engine is so damn slow.
If the last time you looked at IE was version 6 or so, you don't know what you're talking about when you bash it.
-
IE11 isn't bad... per se....it's whenever i see someone using it they invariably have fifty bajillion browser toolbars installed and enabled.
-
I'll see your invariant and vary it.
(FWIW none of the people I work with have toolbars other than the Google one, which for some reason they like, and the Norton one, which...uh, I dunno.)

if they work in the industry i doubt they have more than one, maaaaybe two.....
but then they aren't the ones that ask me to fix their computers....

What's the problem with this one? I accept that I may be missing something obvious since I haven't finished my first cup of tea yet

I think he means the favicon on the Amazon thread tab.
Yeah, I see that all the time. Ten topics open in different tags, two have the favicon, the rest are blank. I do not have "Show incoming message notifications on favicon " set.
-
Show incoming message notifications on favicon
That setting actually works pretty well.
Only on topic overview tabs though, go figure.
-
It works here, so either MSIE or Windows
-
This is what I see on IE....
Yeah - we're still on IE8 here.
-
Give that to your IT team, even Discourse is telling you that You're Doing It Wrong™
-
It works here, so either MSIE or Windows
I see it on Chrome too.
Edit: Nope, I remembered incorrectly.
-
Apparently they're pushing the boat out and rolling out IE9 soon.
Doesn't bother me either way, only use IE for the one internal app that requires it and Chrome for everything else.
-
If the last time you looked at IE was version 6 or so, you don't know what you're talking about when you bash it.
I think a lot of that hatred is a leftover from the days that you had to build two websites, one for IE and another for everything else. And it is still a lot slower than Chrome.
I, in particular, hate it because it is the default install and defaults to MSN for a homepage, which takes forever to load when you just installed an OS. Then it pops 2-3 more screens and asks you to change settings, etc. Not a very good first experience. I just want to download Chrome, and it takes me 30 seconds to close all the shit out so that I can get to what I want to.
I keep an MSI of Chrome on my flash drive and all the servers I work with because of that.
Also, the JS rendering is slower than old people fucking.

Can't you just enter
http://google.com/chrome
in the Winr prompt?
-

I could. But after I was annoyed a few times I just started carrying an MSI. It is faster than downloading, etc. Not by much, but it is always with me.
Edit: Now that I think about it, I would still have to deal with all of the annoying first-run stuff.
-
Apparently they're pushing the boat out and rolling out IE9 soon.
We got a message about IE11 upgrades being optionally allowed now. And then they say, don't do it if you use a list of about 10 different internal apps. I don't use any of those, but I also don't use Windows, so...

I wonder if any of them tried out Compatibility Mode or know about intranet settings...

I suspect they have, but aren't interested in getting help desk requests from the surely thousands of people who wouldn't be able to figure it out without having their hands held through the process.

Not to mention that the users will forget about what you told them no more than you get off the phone. When IE11 broke a bunch of sites (mostly due to shitty JS browser detection showing that 11<8), we walked users through compatibility settings over and over again. Now the policy is to just roll them back to IE9.
As soon as MS completes their genesis to MicrosoftOne and we get IE-One, shit will be really fun. ;)
Or, we need them to jump to IE81 so that all of the old shitty JS browser detection will work again...

hmm?
oh the avatar change?
i decided to have my avatar match my long name.
should shop a santa hat or mistletoe in there for the season though....
-
-
This post is deleted!
-
Can foxes eat mistletoe without the whole death/sickness thing?
-
hmm... good point. santa hat it shall be.
-
Fine, point out the poisonous aspect. I was hoping that she might infer the other, more traditional, use of mistletoe. That could be dangerous around here.

what the kisses? i like those. they put ears right in nibble range.

Oooh, I like biting. It's like kissing, but there's a winner!

I'll be testing it out tonight.

Bought a new tub of ricotta cheese. It's sealed under the lid with clear plastic. There's no tab to easily peel it off, so I had to cut it with a knife. The plastic is of such quality that it won't rip cleanly and I ended up ripping it into a bunch of little pieces.

So I get emails with progress reports for my daughter (8th grade). These are good, because we can see how she's doing, if she's missed homework, etc. Some class names are kind of stupid, though. For instance:
Invest Mat/Ener
What do you suppose that could be? I always see that and think, "Oh, Investing, must be some sort of economics elective or whatever. Do they really have stuff like that in junior high these days?"
Oh, no, it's actually something more like, "Investigation of Matter and Energy," i.e., Science. Just call it Science, motherfuckers! Or stop abbreviating it.
-
It was about 30 - 35 degrees outside, I was on my motorcycle and dressed appropriately which means heavy gloves, neoprene face/neck mask, and a good beanie under my helmet. Then I got an itch inside my ear canal! Had to man up until I got home because I sure wasn't pulling over and stripping some of my gear off just to scratch.
-
first world problems thread is that way. ;-)
EDIT: spellar spelling of first there @accalia
-
There is likely to be some overlap between that topic and this.
-
That's true, but this thread allows for non-FWP.

It was about 30 - 35 degrees outside
Even though we're both in the US, my first interpretation of that was °C, and I wondered why you'd want
heavy gloves, neoprene face/neck mask, and a good beanie under my helmet
in such hot weather. Doh!
-
currently 3 degrees outside. just took dog for a walk. neither one of us wore a jacket.
i regretted that decision only when the wind picked up about half way through the walk.
