But are you a Banburist?

  • Interesting online test / hiring method for Google?

    Article: https://ello.co/pftio/post/-8bXK2nYAXM1v2wzGp9X5g

Basically, there is some kind of invite-only area here: http://google.com/foobar

    Then, there's this: http://146.148.62.204/

It gives you a cryptography test with a time limit. Here's what I got:

If you manage to solve that, you are let into a terminal-like interface, where you're given more tasks in python and java. And eventually, supposedly, you get the invite to the aforementioned super secret club.

This is above my head, but if someone here wants to give it a try, I would be interested to learn what's the big deal.
1 down - 11283

2 down - 10254

Easy when you have the Windows Calculator to hand 😄

But then I don't see how putting the numbers in would work with 2 & 4 across

3 down - Ban

Wikipedia to the rescue 😄
The across ones look like regular expressions, though what they apply to, I don't know.

I think I'm missing some context here...

Edit: Spoiler'd up now. Had to do each line separately as the tag doesn't span lines. And the IP site isn't working.

  • IP link works for me. Might be regional. Try a proxy.

Also, everyone gets a different test, I think.

And yeah, Wikipedia and calculator are cool for "Down", but I have no idea what's the deal with regexes.

It's working for me now too.

And it seems the test is random; refresh the page, and you get a different test.

IP site works for me, but I am not even close to being able to figure out the answers to the questions I received, except for the binary conversions. 😄

  • fyi, the terminal like window is at the /foobar/ address. You can go there after you are "invited" by the crossword any time udring the 48 hour period.

  • Great; Google hiring more aspie nerds who can solve complicated math problems but have no idea how humans actually interact with each other.

    EXACTLY WHAT GOOGLE NEEDS MOST!!!

  • My co-worker got this on the Google search page, evidently it comes up if you search for enough/the right tech terms.

  • Interesting. Was it included with the search results or as an add?

My impression was, Google is pretty strict about their search results. Careful not to play favorites, always hiding their market share and pretending Bing is a serious competition. They are super-afraid someone will realize they have monopoly in the search engine business and summon government red tape and/or legislation against them. Or so I've heard.

  • I think it was something that stood out at the top, not sure.

  • Or you could just wait until one of their in-house recruiters emails you and tries to persuade you that you want to work for Google SO MUCH that you'd be prepared to move to Hyderabad.

I'd removed myself from the job market several years before that happened. It was kind of weird.

If they wanted me to move back to the Bay Area, I'd probably take them up on it. Hyderabad, not so much.
