3DFX VooDoo 3 2000

  • Are these thing of any use now of days? i know its old as hell but it seems a nice card, running at 143MHZ is not bad, thing is, are there any 3d-modeling programs that still use GLIDE?

  • Dude. DUDE.

The TNT2 Ultra I _threw away_ the other day is more powerful than a Voodoo 3 2000. I just got a Matrox G45 for free from Tiger Direct a few weeks ago. That's more powerful than a 2000.

And they both support OpenGL under OSX, Windows and Linux, which is a more comprehensive API than Glide.

    :-D

The Quake2-era level editors and early versions of UnrealEd most likely :-)

  • Is it any use? Well that would depend.

Do you happen to run a computing museum in your spare time? Otherwise, no.

I have some old games that would only run on a Vodoo card. Not that I want to play any of these, though.

Oh man... GLIDE. those were the days.

    I still have (i swear)

    2x The voodoo 2 12MB pci cards

you know the ones i am talking about? SLI? you had to have a 2d card to pump them? they'd take over when 3d was required?

Those were so awesome for the time cause my friends would have their little 16 meg cards and i was running a full 32MB discreet memory graphics. :-)

Actually, I have one. My old favorite game "Warhammer: Dark Omen" will only run with 3D acceleration on a genuine 3Dfx card. Atm I run it in a virtual WIn98 machine but then I get only software rendering :(

That's something I really don't miss about those days, all of the games that will only play on certain hardware, especially ones supplied with the cards. (Do they still do that? I guess it's still possible, if not required). Had a few with my Matrox Mystique (back when they actually made stuff).

  • Reminds me of my elementary years.

I had those as well, quite nice :) Used to have one, then I wanted to add one of my friends cards who upgraded but it turned out they didnt mix because they didnt have the same amount of memory :( 12 meg and 16 meg cards didnt want to go SLI :\

This card did make a world of difference in Unreal though, made me go 'ooooooeeeeehhhhhhh' :D

The pain with these old cards, as with TNT(2) cards, is that the resolutions they support are pretty crappy. If you can get 1024x768x16 out of them, consider yourself a happy man/woman. Might be that you cant even squeez more the 8bit color depth out of it at that resolution.

I ran a TNT2 as a second card for a short while to have dualhead support (I figured; what the hell, it's laying around anyway), but the poor colour depth in combination with a slightly bad monitor made me come back on that decision pretty fast.

I still have all these old cards, which I use for servers that either dont require a GUI at all or where I only connect with terminal server client, but even in the last case it can be 'annoying' to see that 16bit color depth on your normal screen, especially since some programs cant seem to deal with it and their GUI's look like crap.

  • No way! I have two of them from back in the day. One is AGP and the other is PCI... Both of them are VooDoo 3 2000s. I think I have the AGP card installed on an old Asus P3B-F motherboard PII450 setup as a file server / testing server on my local network.

I seem to remember playing Half-Life with my VooDoos before I upgrade about two years ago or so. The only thing I couldn't play that I wanted to was WWIIOnline. Not enough memory on the cards and I don't think WWIIOL stopped supporting glide a long time ago. Good cards, though. For drivers you might want to check out http://www.voodoofiles.com
