IIHS prejudiced against fat women because the fat dummy made for them won't help? I guess?

  • I'm not even sure I can figure out the argument in this blog article. So some personal/company made a fat crash test dummy they want the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to use it for crash testing. Ok; fair enough.

The IIHS says the fat dummy works no better than the normal-sized (but heavier-weight) dummies they already use for crash testing. Ok; sounds like a pretty good reason for not adopting it.

Somehow this turns into "scientists only study fat people so they can use the gained knowledge to make fun of them". I'm not even kidding about this.

  • Don't you know? You aren't allowed to make observations. Observations are subjective and therefore discriminatory.

  • Bonus WTF I just saw in the comments:

Reminder: Please do not use the reply function per the commenting policy so we can maintain flat threads to accommodate people with visual processing disorders. Nested replies will be deleted, and commenters are welcome to repost them as non-threaded comments. Thanks!

How many levels of WTF is contained in this paragraph? Let's count:

    1. Create a policy to not use a software feature, instead of just removing or dummying-out the feature,

    2. The policy being in place to "accommodate people with visual processing disorders". I'd love to hear about a visual processing disorder that prevents someone from reading a threaded comments section. (Or why they can't just fix the problem using their own CSS stylesheet, but see point 1).

    3. People whose posts violate these idiotic rules written by idiots are summarily deleted. Not reposted with a reminder, not emailed to the poster with an explanation, just outright deleted. Makes me think this policy is more about the petty power of deleting shit than it is about accessibility.

    4. Thanks!

They're saying it's not clear that a bigger dummy would work better. The article doesn't say if they've done any testing or what. It sounds like they probably haven't, given a quote from Chrysler:

"We are studying the modification made to an average male anthropomorphic test size to increase its mass and will evaluate the effects of the modifications when it becomes available. In the meantime, we look forward to the test results," said Chrysler spokesman Nick Cappa.

But bloggers know their audience, I'm sure.

On the article in general, she sounds like a professional shroud-waver/offense-taker.

Of course, if she really did have a problem with all these perceived slights on her size/shape (rather than using it as an excuse to lambaste others for 'their thoughtlessness',) there are at least two things that she, herself, could do about it.

It's a "feminist blog," but their FAQ is somewhat amusing....

Asshat Triumvirate—Three variations on "asshat" coined by CaitieCat: Rectal Haberdasher, Anal Milliner, and Cranial Colonic.

    Douchehound—Variation on douchebag.

Dudebro—A Dudebro is an extremely privileged man, typically white, straight, cisgender, able-bodied, and middle class or higher. He wields his privilege like a weapon, hates to be challenged on it, and steadfastly refuses to examine how it benefits him. He favors rape jokes, Judd Apatow movies, and Ed Hardy gear, glories in his man-child existence, seeks a woman to be his mommy/fuckhole, and doesn't think ladies and gays should play video games.

Fatsronauts—One of Liss' many terms of endearments for her fellow fatties.

Fauxgina—An honorary vagina granted by a feminist/womanist woman to a F/W or F/W-allied man as a show of solidarity, as in: "Your 'Honorary Feminazi Cooter' fauxgina is in the mail."

Hexfat—Fat cursed upon a child by hir mother. Usage: O NOES HEXFAT!!!eleventy!

Most of which had no plausible reason for moderation action. I mean, the stuff disparaging discourse or discodevs makes sense, but it was like random shit was deleted. And maybe it was.

No. It turns into "scientists won't study fat people because they literally want them to die in car accidents", which is worse.

And you forgot "obese people are only more likely to die because the car makers won't make the cars safe for them" which is also implied in the post. Not also because, you know, their bodies are kinda fucked up.

But making fun of fat acceptance apologists is too easy. Their entire philosophy is based on two provably, scientifically wrong ideas: 1. being fat is not unhealthy 2. you can't actually lose weight by dieting, it's a myth. They're basically conspiracy theorists.

It's a matter of truthiness. I'm buttuming that they think that it's not possible that a healthy diet can lead to weight loss in any way.

  • @boomzilla said:

    @accalia said:

Mean BMR was 1,500kcal/day in one study. Add to that expenditure through stuff that isn't 'resting' per day, mixed with - say - a 2,000 kcal/day intake, and it's not that impossible to have sustainable and healthy weight loss without the need to exercise.

Of course, if you make the effort to exercise (like get out of bed,) you can increase that 2,000.

And also bear in mind that someone who's 'overweight' is likely to have a higher BMR due to that 'extra weight' anyway and that 2,000 kcal/day can be increased because of that.

What you can't do is eat 5,000+ kcal/day, and have the extent of your exercise be sitting on your sofa all day pissing and moaning on your blog about people having thought crimes against obese people, and feeling sorry for yourself when you're not prepared to do anything to help yourself and competing in victimhood poker on the internet.

Of course there are those of us who are obese, according to the BMI scale, who are quite happily not rubbing that fact into other peoples faces like she is...

And I've sure I've mentioned it here before (but can't find it), but for anyone who is concerned about their over/under-weightedness, I've found https://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/ useful in the past. YMMV of course.

I just pooped my weigh way to normality.

  • What a misogynist. Laughing at feminism? You're so entitled.

  • Right. And I'm sure it's no easy task, don't get me wrong. But the claims I've seen were "no statistically significant number of fat people have ever managed to lose weight (with no surgery) and not gain it again within a few months. Therefore fat = permanent, therefore not my fault". And this is just false.

Also, I want to say, I obviously don't want fat people to be stared at in the street, or mocked, or mistreated in any way. I'm an underweight person myself (which is also bad). An old man once randomly came to me when I was standing on the street and told me to go eat something. WTF, that's something you don't do. This makes "fat acceptance" blogs a somewhat annoying thing because there are cases where overweight people are actually unfairly treated, but they are drowning in a sea of "car seats are too small! I DEMAND they make them bigger!" rants (SJWs in a nutshell).

There is something I've read and might or might not be true, however, that says humans have basically no long-term willpower. In other words, that the instinctive parts of our brain will sooner or later beat the rational parts. And that's why sticking to a diet you don't like is almost impossible. This doesn't mean you can't lose weight ever, you need to find ways to cheat the system, enjoy the new diet, etc. But this thread was about obesity, not just chubbiness.

Listen, you're dealing with people who aren't rational. If it weren't fat she's hung up on, it'd be some other weird bullshit like the guy who thought that the Challenger disaster...oh, look, the site's disappeared in the last dozen years. I think it was a conspiracy like the 911 Troofers believe in.

This guy was a massive kook, and a space-related blog I read at the time (2001!) was infested by him and his son, who was an entirely different kind of kook.

Eh, not really. Exercise helps you build muscles (and that "muscles make you lose weight just by existing" thing is a myth), but doesn't really take that much calories off of you - if you're not on a really fast weight loss plan, just skipping a snack will net you more benefit than a few squats. In fact, you're pretty likely to build weight by exercise - which is not a bad thing, since it's muscle mass, but it screws with your results.

I had a lot of success with Atkins, oddly enough - I should try that again, but I really hate cooking.

The correct word to use for non-gender specific individual is "their". As in "this person was probably not given enough attention by their mother as a child".

Stop making up pronouns, Internet. Grumble.
