Alchemy in the Cloud
-
Ingredients:
- Microsoft
- SharePoint
- Office365
I foolishly considered creating a new site in our Cloudy SharePoint environment.
Create New Subsite ...
Select my custom template ...
Ok ...Error (in Dutch):
So basically it complains that my chosen site template uses a certain SharePoint Feature but that this feature is not available/not installed in this Site.
Strange because the template is just a copy of an existing sub-site of this site so there shouldn't be anything in there that isn't available in this Site or Site Collection. But what 'Feature' does it says it's missing? AddAlchemyApp
Strange name never seen that feature before ... so just to be save let's have a Google for what this thing is supposed to be ...Oh look this guy is asking WTF this Alchemy App is ...
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/ce574f29-5934-4f83-818b-47d8e5350ba3/alchemy-web-app-use?forum=sharepointgeneralSo somebody at MS pushed the wrong button sending out this 'Feature' to production. Then after some time they found out their mistake and yanked it out again.
Unfortunately I captured my template right in between these two acts leaving me with a ghost Feature in my template.Luckily the nice error message has an Ignore option ... so far I don't seem to be missing any Alchemy

Yep. You appear to be missing 9 units there somewhere.
Whoosh. Actually, that's on purpose--I believe it was a typo someone said PJH should keep.

I... don't think so. Think I'll second that whoosh...
-
Why do you have to second anything? You are the one that hands out the badges.

I try to keep some
frontsemblance of benevolant dictatorship here...(Besides, I'm not the only active member who can hand them out.)

[don't think so][1]

Hm, I can't read that thread.
It's in the Lounge.@Maciejasjmj remarked this in the badges:
Hilarity followed as everybody was cracking up on @PJH 's typo. And because it was so funny it was kept as a joke.
And that was what I was referring to originally
the 356 part is TRWTF
because I would never make a typo like that

Hm, I can't read that thread.
As pointed out it's in The Lounge. You meet all requirements except: Topics Viewed: 272/322.

My company recently went all SharePointy; you have my sympathies.
It's rather amusing seeing them frantically backpedal on what they said originally and spout any amount of ridiculous rubbish try to convince us that O365 Is Good.
For instance, the party line is that OneDrive and SharePoint are not intended to replace our personal and shared LAN drives, respectively. Quoting what they said when they were billing them as exactly that only much better with loads of added features is a wonderfully effective way to produce silence.

Haha. Indeed. Seems like the sales/commercial/marketing side of MS is in an other world. All sales/commercial/marketing people seem to be from a different planet but these specifically are from an other universe.
I'm currently trying to convince people to give up their home-drive in favor of OneDrive. I'm having a blast.
When I started you had a 'MySite' that was somewhat obscure but powerful. You could create additional libraries and they would behave exactly as any other libraries but private. Now with OneDrive you basically have 1 library. You can have others but their is no easy way to access them. It is even harder to access them as of lately.
-
And while typing that out just bumped into another idiotic thing: apparently it's not possible to synchronize image libraries. Why? Because someone at MS hates image libraries?

Ooh, there's another amusing party line that they've definitely been saying all along and not just since they found out how broken it is, honest.
If anyone is having any sort of problem with syncing their OneDrive, as was billed to us in the original training as a Very Useful Thing and a thing you should probably do as soon as you get the tools rolled out to you, the response is that you shouldn't sync unless you really really need to, and then they try very hard to convince you that you don't. Insisting that do really need to is another magic silence word.

shared LAN drives
What are these things of which you speak?
We love Google and Dropbox. (and Domains, what are those? Tho it does make it easier for me to screw up my own machine rather than IT doing it thru policies)
-
Oh, that reminds me, I had a sharepoint question the other day...
Total radio silence. Figures.

Most likely has nothing to do with OneNote. I've had similar issues when linking from inside a SharePoint wiki page directly to a document. Worse document sometimes get opened without 'knowing' that it originates from SharePoint and that it should save back to that location. I 'solved' it by linking to either the library or to the document open in the online viewer.
What's your default browser? What happens if you paste the url in the address bar? It most likely exhibits the same behavior. You might get improvement by messing around with security settings of IE and the default browser but no.
-
Default browser is IE9. Pasting the link brings a "What do you want to do with this file" dialogue; choosing "open" opens it in read-only mode. I've been using a link to the library as a backup but it would be really nice to be able to use the document links, especially since I've had no luck getting something opened as read-only to reliably open for editing.
-
Try had and didn't have any problems even from OneNote to IE9. It opened immediately in edit mode.
Sure your SP is configured as intranet or secure in the security settings of IE or something?
-
I have no idea what to look for. Intranet security zone is set to Medium-Low, no "protected mode", and auto-detect sites.
-
Mine is 'trusted' medium-low
Don't know if that makes any difference
