The funny text messages thread
-
I've just spent the last hour wondering why people keep putting the phone down on me. Turns out I was on mute the whole time. Fucking hell
-
My wife and I almost lost touch before getting the relationship off the ground due to something along these lines.
After an initial day out that went (I thought) very well, I called her up the next day to see how things are and plan the next date. If you can picture the timing of her responses to questions/statements as identical to mine, the conversation went something like this:
1st call:
Her: Hello?
Me: Hi, it's me.
Her: Who is this?
Me: It's /says my name/.
/click/Rinse, repeat.
3rd call:
Her: Hello??
Me: Is something wrong?
Her: Get a life!!
/click/So I drive over there in 20 minutes and ring the doorbell, a bit shaken up. She answers in her PJs. I ask: "what do you mean get a life?" She says: "that was YOU?"
Turns out my home phone's speaker-side of the handle had chosen that day to stop working. So, to replay the above from her point of view, just substitute my speech with complete silence. -_-
YES, THIS WAS WORTH THE NECRO!

@redwizard is a necromancer. awesome!
also glad it worked out for you. that would have been rather unfortunate if it hadn't.

Since this has morphed into a Phone Silence thread, here's an embarrassing story from my early days in jobland, when I wasn't exactly experienced in office phone systems and call transfers and the like:
Got a call from the helpdesk saying they had a client I'd been helping through tickets wanting to speak to me in person.
"OK, put them through"
SilenceMore silence
Surely there should be some sort of beep when the transfer completes? Or I should at least be able to hear background noise from their location
I cough slightly, in the hope that if there is somebody there they'll realise I'm there and not talking
More silence
Wait a minute, when I've phoned places and been put through, the person on the other end normally starts the conversation. I think I've been sitting here like a lemon for a good couple of minutes while the client waits for some hint they're not on a dead line.
"Hello?"
And then it continues fine.
This is why I chose to work with computers, not people

Since this has morphed into a Phone Silence thread
My first proper job was in a business support role. We looked after specific apps for a single area of the business and there was a company-wide helpdesk for standard Office applications, printing, hardware. In order to get away from the "us and them" mentality we had a time when one of "us" had to sit in with "them".
Despite being resented it was actually a decent idea as we got to know each other. Anyway... while I was sitting in on the phones the guy next to me put the person he was talking to on hold while he discussed the issue. He probably had them on hold for a couple of minutes. When he took them off hold he explained what the next steps were. Before hanging up he said:
"I just like to point out that while you're on hold we can still hear what you're saying..."
TL, DR: Work phones had on hold where they couldn't hear you but you could hear them.
-
My sister called me today. Here's how the conversation went:
Her: Hello?
Me: Hello?
[she hangs up]It turns out I didn't answer fast enough and she gave up and hung up right after saying "Hello?".
She had forgotten her key and needed to be let into the house.
For some reason, it didn't cross her mind to knock on the door or ring the doorbell or yell my name. I asked her why she didn't just send me a message on Hangouts and she said she was worried about using up too much of her data plan. From a few feet outside the house.

I like how @morbiuswilters doesn't actually appear in that thread at all, other than by being referenced. <aside class="quote">Zecc said:Alliterations by coincidence don't exist. Languages must not originate premium quality repetition so trivially.

Burgers. With bacon.
Curse you. Now I'm hungry, and it's two hours 'til lunch here.
-
How was it?
-
Sadly, it was not a burger with bacon. Nor even a burger without bacon.

I had a burger (sadly, without bacon) but it was only from Burger King, and, even more sadly, some rotten customer called with a half an hour's worth of questions someone else could've answered, so I had to reheat it.
Worse, it still tasted like onions even after I took off the onions I ordered it without.

I don't know why, but Burger Kings seem to be rather rare around here. McD, Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Dairy Queen but BKs are few and far between. The only reason this might be considered a not-good thing is that BK is generally the least expensive fast food burger.
If I really want a good (but overpriced and too big) fast food burger (with or without bacon) and enough fries to feed my entire department, there's a Five Guys right across the street from where I work. In fact, BRB; I'm going to go get myself some dinner.
-
Yeah, BK Lounge seems to be super-cheap, so when I'm feeling thrifty, but willing to hate my body, I do eat lunch there.
Don't even mention Five Guys...I have one a couple of blocks from where I live, and they drain my wallet. Almost as bad as Slater's or Which Wich.
-

Around here it's generally a fair bit more expensive than McD. We don't have any of your fancy "Wendys" or "Jack in the Box".
Don't know if the chain has made it to America, but for a less fast food experience and a great burger, it's hard to beat Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Not sure if they're in your area, but if so, try Portillo's.
-
It doesn't look like it. A couple in southern California, a couple in the greater Phoenix area (Scottsdale & Tempe, for the Arizonans here), one in Indiana, but mostly in Illinois.
-
We don't even get Wendy's or Jack in the Box here. McD, BK, KFC seem to be everywhere, I've seen a Five Guys once in London (and I think it's the same thing, didn't have the time to check last time I was that way in London) but Wendy's, JitB and Arby's are not things here.
Which sucks because I like all three of those above McD, BK and sometimes KFC.
-

I've always assumed it's the same. I think there's a few of them over here now, I've been past one in Solihull.

Yeah, but we get Wimpy. How can America compete with that?

Yeah, but we get Wimpy. How can America compete with that?
There's a Speccy game. They can't.
-
It's even joystick compatible. Hot damn, why isn't this in the video game spotlight thread yet?

I didn't think Mr Wimpy was still a thing

There are a lot less than there used to be, but it's still going.
-
I remember seeing a Wimpy like 20 years ago when it stopped being a Wimpy and became an independently owned burger place.
-
Yeah, but we get Wimpy. How can America compete with that?
We have Popeye's. My favorite fast food chicken.

Not as rare as around here....

I won't even eat at McD's, no matter the price. Same for Wendy's, I used to like it, but since I've been eating (slightly) healthier at my old age, my stomach hates that type of food.
-
You might like this place if you're ever in the Dallas area.
-
Huh, that's not too far from where I live.
Do they guarantee no dog in your food?

Same here. I'd go more often, but this place is also not far from me:
I developed a serious BBQ addiction after moving here.

I'll have to pay them a visit next time I go to Austin.

- I don't know how I've lived here for so long and not known about these places.
- Why don't they have a link to Google Maps I don't know where Stephenville is! Oh, zip code suggests it's in FW.

I don't know how I've lived here for so long and not known about these places.
If you're on reddit, go to r/dallas. They have a list.
-
I'll check it out.
I also need a good pizza place. Schlepping all the way up to Stonebriar to go to Mellow Mushroom's a bit more work than I want to do.

I want to try MOS Burger:
I had it once and remember it being good. Should go there again.

If anyone ever visits Düsseldorf, I cannot recommend Space Burger enough.
Campy 70's interior, home made burgers, big vegetarian selection ( ) and best of all: chilli mayonnaise.
It's heaven on a bun.
Filed under: dear Firefox, "Düsseldorf" is not a misspelling of "Eldorado". WTF?
-
I'd recommend Good Burger, home of the good burger.
