Can we get an itemized bill for that???

  • I work in Computer Support in the Chemistry Department at a certain University in Utah.  Here in Chemistry we take care of all of our own networking.  We pull our own wires, have our own mail, file, and web servers, and are completely separate from the rest of campus which is controlled by the Office of Information Technology (OIT).  The only thing OIT has in our building are the phones.

While re-wiring the labs here in the department, we inadvertently cut one of their phone cables.  We initially thought about re-pulling the wire ourselves, which would be a relatively easy pull.  The cable comes out of the lab, directly into a closet, and down 3 floors to the panel.  However, being good honest citizens of our University, we reported it to them so they could come and fix it.  The local telecom company bills $250 for a job like this, which probably nets them a pretty good profit, since they don't use an entire roll of cable for the job, and it would take them around an hour to pull the cable, terminate it, and be gone.

OIT's bill for the repair: $964.15

Can we get an itemized bill for that???

  • Obvious question.  Are they unionized?  If so, then it's at least 3 hours with 3 people.  One guy to do the work and two to supervise.  The extra time is because they get their allotted one hour break at the time they were there.

(yes, I worked for a union at one point in my life, so I'm allowed to poke fun)

  • Cost of cable:  $75.00

    Cost of labor:  $125.00

Look on your face when you see the bill:  Priceless.

    Total:   $964.15
