Yes, this is a real scripted thing from CoD:AW.

Why would you use Mouse3 in QTEs?!

Why the fuck is it a QTE in the first place? Generic blob of pixels #4877234 just died! I need some time to compose myself before you throw this shit at me!

NOTE: I have no idea what the storyline is, if the character that died is important in any way, and if the storyline is even worth a damn anyway.

    It's Call of Duty.

Yeah. So I buttumed it's: something stupid with explosions, no, and no. But still.

  • I find it more jarring that they only render the text in proper 1920x1080 and seem to have just scaled up the rest. It also looks really hazy (as if there's a lot of pollution).

I wouldn't expect a proper story from CoD but they should at least make it look good.

Watch out for Agent 47 popping up out of the coffin…

  • I'm disappointed. I wanted to squeeze out tears by pumping "F", ending with my character falling on his knees and wailing if I fill up the scale (and getting an achievement, of course).

@discoursebot you have a lot of work to do today.

You don't think I actually play CoD, do you? 😛

I nicked the screenshot from Ars Technica.

  • FoxDev

then it's not entirely unlikely that they had a key mapped to the mouse.

a lot of FPS players do that so they never have to move from WASD.

it's still a bit of a WTF message but it makes more sense than using the action the cut scene is looking for and asking the player to remember where they mapped it.

  • FoxDev

Nothing wrong with a little reminder of the control, true. But why is that particular action a QTE? Why not just a normal cut-scene?

  • Player immersion.

  • FoxDev

2 reasons i can think of

    1. to get the player more involved in the story by making them participate in cutscenes (even if they are on rails)
    2. like some games (Mass Effect2+) there are in game consequences of either paying respects or failing to. so the player is making a choice that impacts their gameplay experience

edit: what @aliceif said, both my reasons fall under that.

  • FoxDev

    @accalia said:

    2. like some games (Mass Effect2+) there are in game consequences of either paying respects or failing to. so the player is making a choice that impacts their gameplay experience

If that is what they were going for, then where's the option for 'flipping the bird at the widow'?

  • Maybe that's what it is?
The middle finger is pretty suitable for using mouse wheels with!

  • Yeah but someone customized their controls. The default is F on PC, or X on Xbox One.

  • So, how immersed did you feel when you paid respects?

  • The really funny part is that after "paying respects", your character leaves the funeral early. (Seriously. He's a mile away when the 21 gun salute happens. You can hear it faintly in the background audio. So respectful!)

  • The problem isn't the prompt, the problem is that the prompt makes it look like a mini-game when it's really just playing a cutscene. Well, and the prompt, which is about the most tone-deaf thing I've ever seen from a major publisher.

The REAL question is why nobody at Activision said, "hey guys, the Internet's gonna tear us apart for this one... why not just play the cutscene when the player gets close automatically? Or change the wording to something like, 'Press F to continue story'? Or any of a billion things we could have done to make this more tasteful?"

  • Zero. I will not ever play the single-player of Advanced Warfare. Just like I never played the single player of Ghosts, or Black Ops II, or Battlefield 4.

The whole concept of shoveling-in a single player mode that nobody cares about, especially the game's developers, is just insulting. I thought we got over this when Unreal and Quake both independently decided to separate the two modes into different games back in like '98, but now it's back. Because the gaming industry has zero accumulated memory or experience.

EDIT: oh wait, I'm a liar. I did do Black Ops II because a friend told me 1) it's extremely short (true), and 2) it has Godzilla in it (false; although it does have Godzilla's sound effects in it.)

  • Holy crap.

This topic just taught me that I can use my ring finger for mb2 and middle finger for mb3.

Why did I never think about that?

Now I can actually reach the buttons behind the scroll wheel (on my MMO mouse).

  • I liked the single player in World At War.

Which was the only CoD with realistic gun physics.

Which nobody played because it actually took thought instead of twitch reaction dual wield uzis that can kill anyone in four bullets. Or dual wield shotguns (OMGWTFBBQ).

It had significantly less annoying 13 years olds on it too.

Which is why it was the last CoD I bought myself for myself. Wife bought Black Ops, and I asked her not to buy CoD again.

*chuckles* Just wait until you fly a Falcon or a neuting Armageddon in Eve Online...there are not enough buttons on your mouse for this

Besides, not being able to keep track of what's what in any sane way would suck when switching ships. Ever hopped out of a fight, changed classes, then hopped right back into it? I have done the Eve equivalent of that, and it would not work if you had everything bound to your mouse 'just so'.

  • I wouldn't buy them either, except I have a couple good friends who LOOOOOVE CoD. So if I don't own the latest CoD I basically don't see them for months at a time, which sucks. So I buy it. And after Ghosts they both had to basically beg me.

At least Advanced Warfare is decent. Ghosts was crap. In all respects. The levels were crap. The graphics were too dense and confusing. The level-up unlocks were awful and made no sense. They even fucked up the netcode, which could have been a Control-C, Control-V from Black Ops 2's excellent netcode.

When's the last time you played CoD? Believe me, they map everything on the Xbox 360 gamepad, and A does like triple-duty to-boot. They've also overloaded the left analog stick "click" in Advanced Warfare to do dodge moves, which bugs me because I can never click thumbsticks reliably.

I love your condescending "chuckles" though. Thanks for that.

  • @blakeyrat said:

Never! Practically all my console-FPS experience is on the Halo side of the ball, so Activision can take their seafood and shove it where an airport shrimp cocktail that's been sitting out too long belongs!

Yeah, thumbstick-buttons are not the greatest idea, especially when you have to hold them down.

</snark>The chuckling was aimed at the MMO-mouse department...

  • CoD4 was the last Call of Duty I extensively played. I played a bit of MW2 but the online community instantly died when MW3 came out, and my Xbox red-ringed and I never replaced it, and I'd already been burned out on Activision's 23 Guitar Hero titles per year and didn't want to spend my entire retirement savings on keeping up-to-date with CoD too.

Then out of nostalgia I bought MW2 on Steam for like $10 one day, but every single match is hacked. The first match I joined, I killed someone and instantly got level 70 max prestige. I played several more and never got a standard MW2 multiplayer game. It was all infinite ammo one-shot-max-prestige lob grenades across the map noclip wallhack nonsense. Every single game.

There was that baby wolf that would follow you if you let a wolf piss on your box while you were hiding in it in first MGS...

Wow. I only just now realized how weird that game is.

  • I need to remember to watch these sometime when I'm not at work.

  • The entire series is weird.

Well, except Metal Gear 1 and 2 (the ones before the first Solid).

Wait, no, MG2 is the one where you had to follow the female guard to the bathroom1... and the female bathroom had an elevator to the sewers in it...

1They reused this in Metal Gear Solid 1.

I've got a G13 one-hand keyboard. 22 keys, 2 thumb buttons, and an analog stick you can't reliably click. Makes for 66 keybinds, plenty for WoW. No clue how it'd do in eve, but sounds like you'd get some distance at least.

You need 16 binds for each rack (i.e. 2 per module, and those are dedicated because different ships have different module->keybinding mappings + overheat). So, that's 48 of your 66 keybinds off the list right there.

Add six for your autopilot controls, a few more for broadcasts (shield, armor, capacitor at a minimum), and the need to have your Ctrl modifier key accessible in order to target anything at all, and you are up to 58 of 66.

The current target-tagging shortcuts bring that number up to oh, 64 of 66, and that's not counting frequently used windows/views (such as pulling up the starmap!), camera controls, or other window-specific keyboard shortcuts. And you'll still need the mouse for half of everything, because the Eve UI is insane in the sense that there are precious few usage patterns that can be condensed into straightforward keybindings without running out of keys.

Oh, and that analog stick? Useless!

Filed under: a keyboard-only interface to Eve would be like playing Emacs or Vim, and that's not counting manual piloting

EDIT: Oh, I forgot about 3-4 extra piloting controls...get my point now, @PleegWat? ;)
