How stupid Facebook users can be?

  • I had a dev console open on a page, and absentmindedly checked my FB. And I got slapped in the face by this:

Yes, this is a dev console.

    Two issues:

    a) TIL that you can apparently apply styles to console.log messages in Chrome. What the fuck on at least ten levels.
    2. How stupid do you need to be to fucking XSS yourself?

WTF! And it's a nice feature! Helps a lot when debugging. Firefox also allows this.

On number two, yes, people are quite stupid. I remember back in the days sending people the sub7 installer over IRC or ICQ and have some fun with their CD drives 😄

This specially worked with guys trying to hook up (I pretended to be a girl) or with people trying to hack into hotmail (I pretended to be some Ukranian cracker). Fun times.

not that stupid just naive, we are all susceptible to social engineering

Here using unintended clever social engineering you go Eldelshell confessing to a criminal activities in his pass. distributing maleware /viruses, Phishing/Impersonation.

    👍

  • It's not really a "stupid Facebook users" thing, but more a symptom of the "rise of the wizardry" brought on by our increasingly specialized world. As more things get more complex (computers, cars, HVAC systems, home entertainment setups), ain't nobody got time for keeping track of the odds and ends of how things work. After a certain point, the how becomes indistinguishable from black magic, and the end user winds up just mindlessly following whatever instructions they get from a source that seems knowledgeable.

Hell, I'm almost that way with my car. If the mechanic told me I needed to back it out counter-clockwise on odd numbered days when there was a full moon in Jupiter, I'd probably nod my head and try to figure out how to make that happen. (Well, ok, I'm a little more sophisticated than that, but...)

This. How many times have we navigated a user to open cmd so they can ping an IP or similar when trying to help them over the phone? And nothing broke after that, hell, whatever was troubling them before may have even started working now! Not that the pinging helped, but I doubt 99% of the people who got told to do that can separate a ping from the fix.

So really, if archaic commands worked before on their computer, why wouldn't they do the same for Facebook?

  • I suspect normal people don't know what one of these new, fangled XSSs is. This is because if everybody knew everything, we probably wouldn't bother with XSS.

kids these days, with your hooches and your sugary alcoholic drinks and your new fangled XSSs. In my day we had regular Excesses(s)! We didn't shorten Excesses to 3 letters! we just got on and enjoyed them to excess! Now where's my false teeth and bag of LSD tabs, I need to trip some balls!
