You look like you can handle yourself some Python
-
So, day NaN of
unemploymentfreelance work, and I receive this email:Hi David:
You and I don’t know each other but it looks like you have solid experience with Python and SQL. I'm impressed and have a few founder friends that would be too:) I have a client that is looking for a Lead Python Developer in Charleston, South Carolina.
Open for a quick chat anytime next week? (2 minutes)
Cheers,
Guy who works at ironically named recruiterie
Now... I do have experience with Python. It's mostly the kind of random, not solid experience that comes from working with Linux and FOSS for two decades. IE, fixing server scripts that someone wrote in Python because... WHY DID THEY WRITE THIS IN PYTHON?!?!
It is also true that I have some code in my more-than-pitiful github that contains Python; indeed, it contains maybe 20 lines of it that I could have copied from any page about the thing I was working with (the Ubuntu panel's AppIndicator). So, again, hardly "solid" or "impressive".
The company name: Match Relevant. The job? http://jobs.matchrelevant.com/index.php?m=portal&a=details&jobOrderID=4309315 And they misuse the word "comprise". I also think they're missing about half the stack if all they want is a REST API maintainer. IE, most of the front end.
I suppose, in the end, I am TRWTF for expecting recruiters to halfway understand what they're recruiting for.

Want to join a team that took **it's** last (current) company public?
Want to join a company that can't English?
-
Additional WTF: instead of replying to my reply with words, like a human being, I just got an invite from the guy on LinkedIn. I suppose that's efficient.

Because the alternatives are Bash and Perl.

Because the alternatives are Bash and Perl.
And because Python is awesome for writing scripts. (I'd never use it for anything else, though.)

Throw some Django on top, it works for other things.

...hrm... I'm not sure I'd pick Python over BASH. Certainly not for scripts.

Oh dear jabeebus, what have I started!?

Why not? It's impossible to write a readable Bash script.
-
I thought that was the point of bash scripts...
-
Why not? It's impossible to write a readable Bash script.
In terms of readability, I'd put Python and BASH closer together before I'd contrast them.
-
It is possible to write readable Bash. It's even possible to write readable Perl. It's just rarely done…

I rarely see readable code in any language; so far it seems to mostly dwell in Loch Ness.
