The $3000 OS

  •

    This is a classic.

    http://www.getacoder.com/projects/need_operating_system_42879.html

    From the site:

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    Description
    Hi,

So I'm posting for a rather large project. I need someone to program me a new OS (Operasting System) that looks different than Ms Windows XP etc. but has the same style. It does not need to run on a mac but all the other PCs. It's supposed to have a stylish look with clear edges etc. And ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE JUST A REDESIGNED WINDOWS as I'm going to sell that operating system later on. It's going to be called BlueOrb.

These are some important points :

It should have ALL THE FEATURES that Windows Xp Professional has.
ALL the files that run on Windows XP ust also run on the BlueOrb OS.
It must have a very user-friendly interface (like MS WINDOWS XP)
When it gets Installed, the user needs to insert a serial number.
It HAS to be HACKER SAFE!
It must be quick and good looking.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    and the project budget $1000 - $3000

  • A. Nothing is hacker safe.

    B. Nothing that is is quick.

    C. I'm pretty sure he could be sued for patent infringement and the like, given his desired description.

    D. $1000-$3000?!?! This is like a 6-month minimum project to get to a decent state (that meets maybe 1 of his requirements)... if it's just one person. Nobody will take that pay.

  • Hah, no grip on reality whatsoever. Quite fun.

  • Haha.... I love this "bid"

    "

Hi. I can do this for you next week, when I plan on taking a break from
a nonotech based / atomic fission driven search engine thats going to
make larry page wet his pants. 6 days to code, 1 to rest. It will be
written from scratch and completely original in design, so don't worry
about copyright bs. I plan to write the entire OS in C, and
blindfolded, if its all the same to you. 100% secure will not be a
problem either...In fact the OS will be designed to leverage jedi mind
tricks to kill anyone that even thinks about breaking in. (i was
thinking maybe make them chop off their feet and jump up and down until
their empty would be fair). Anyways, I'm gonna smoke some more crack,
maybe you should do the same. Thanks!"

  • Gentlemen, I suggest that one of you take Linux, make a few trivial mods, and "sell" it to this guy.

So not only does he want a completely new operating system (or maybe Operasting System is something else entirely...), he also wants a 100% functional version of WINE? I can't see how anyone could turn down $3000 for a project like this.

  • I don't know what's more amazing, the original proposal or the serious responses to it. If everyone is selling snake oil, does anyone actually do any buying?

It occurs to me that while $3000 is laughable to us, it could be considered a small fortune in countries where the cost of living is very very low.

I could do it.  Give me a budget of $20,000,000 and five years to work on it.

  • One of the bids he's gotten... :p

  • Ah yes, the inevitable "my India-based IT outsourcing company can do anything, just sign this contract please" offer...

  • What a bunch of quiche eaters...

A real programmer could do it. In one night. All in fortran and assembler. With no hex calculator.

"If you can't do it in Fortran, do it in assembly language. If you can't do it in assembly language, it isn't worth doing."

  • Pfffffffffffffffffttttttttttppppppppppppppp...

Real programs don't use Fortran. Machine code, dude.

I was thinking someone should tell the guys behind ReactOS that they can make $3k when they finish it.

  • "Strong communication and presentations skills, including ability to communicate intangibles"

I on the otherhand can communicate verbs, nouns AND intangibles

Interesting that every bid from India seems to have that tone.  Almost as if an entire country needs to get a clue.

I didn't say it couldn't be done.... just that nobody with the ability to do it would accept $3000.

  • Step 1) Buy a copy of Windows XP

Step 2) create an unattended cd of windows with a free antivirus and firewall

Step 3) ?????? (Actually, Give the CD to the guy)

Step 4) Money! (Between 1000 and 3000 minus the price of XP)

    Step 3) Send Screenshots

  • The best part about that bid (aside from listing so many technologies/applications that my BS meter is about to overflow), is that NONE of that pertains to designing an operating system!

"We make webpage.  Very good OS!"

I would ideally swear at you but I won't, I'm reasonable.

Even in the poorest countries, where people work for 1 USD/day, one couldn't finish such a project, supposing you find the necessary infrastructure and skilled workers at all there.
