TDWTF SIDEBAR WTF WTF

  • ...in the full forum view, you can't sort by POST date, only LAST POST DATE.

    Everything keeps moving!!!  GAH!

Doesn't the idea of post order mean anything to anyone, how the hell can you go find old stuff if you can't determine what's old?

  • I mentionned this to Alex. Changing it so topics were sorted by start date rather than last post date was one of the many customisations he'd made previously. He wants to reduce the level of customisation; however I'd say having the sorting as it used to be would be advantageous. How it is now is the norm for forums.

  • Another WTF is the CSS giving the same color to visited and unvisited links so you can't tell which articles you've already read (and which you haven't) that way, either.

  • I'm very much used to threads with new replies moving to the top of the list.

Is that weird? Should I learn to read the other indicators of thread activity?

What if an old thread is revived with valuable new content, and it's not on the first threads page?

I prefer things moving around. They don't move randomly.

If you have an account, the forum lightens the visited threads.

  • Replies not moving a threat to the top of the list was one of the first I disabled previously. It was incredibly annoying to figure out which threads were active otherwise. While I don't mind if there's an option, to me it's useless as a default value.

Forums that don't support a treeview are all a WTF.

Okay, I can only speak for myself, but the difference in this forum is that I am usually more interested in the first posting of any given thread, because it contains the funny anecdote/code snippet/screenshot/whatever. Keeping the threads in order of the first post instead of the last post makes it easier to keep track of which ones are new to you.

I admit that in most other dicussion forums the last-post-order is more sensible, but this one is a notable exception.

But I don't want to have to login just to find out which post I've already seen, when the browser provides a perfecly working solution by simply keeping track of visited links. (Remember the K.I.S.S principle?)

All I want is the option (that I can save as default).

I'm not talking about finding some brilliant responses to the WTFs, but the ability to systematically browse thru old ones for entertainment purposes. If they are in a fixed order, I can start from the top and move thru them. As it is, from one day to the next, I can't tell where I've been and where I haven't been. The history (visited links) isn't helping, because , I occasionally have to clear cache and all that to assist in debugging.

  • If you look at the sidebar on the main page, it only puts the newest topics posted. So as long as there isn't a rush, you can find the newest there.

  • I agree with the others.  I'd like to see the option to sort by original post date.  That way I can choose to view new topics, or new posts in old topics.  It would be nice if you could save this (and other view-related settings) as part of a user's profile (shouldn't be difficult to do).

I have other suggestions as well, but this really isn't the forum for it.  Perhaps we should have a forum for website suggestions (such as new content, fixes to the forum software, and other such suggestions).

  • I'll add my vote for being able to sort by first post date.
