What am I looking at?
-
Steam kept giving me annoying "item inventory" notifications. So I clicked them and found this.
I can't click on anything to see what it is, what it does, why I have it, yet I can trade it? Or something?
WTF's the point? Half-baked secondary achievement system? Unusable trading cards for greatness of e-peen? Rogue developer features? I have to be missing something.

Many trading cards contain pretty pretty wallpapers when you look at them.
And you can trade them away for Steam Wallet Moneys. They've been around for a while (A year or so?)
-
I remember taking a while before I could work out where the new items were when I first started getting cards.
I tend to sell them. You only get a few pence each for them but I'm still amazed that people are willing to pay that much for a bit of epeen. I still have my beta participation card because nobody's taken me up on the £10 asking price yet
-
You can give them all to me. I'll take them.
Rantis and I have a "Steam level" competition (yes, e-peen), and he's at 38 and I'm only at 40 which isn't a very comfortable lead. (Although he got the 500xp Steamworks Developer bonus for being in the Guncraft team, bah.) The more card sets I complete, the more XP I get.
-
PM me your Steam ID and you can have mine. I've got a few X-Com ones, the aforementioned beta participant one and a couple of others (probably a few Civ V ones after spending about 5 hours playing it last night)
-
You can also sell them on the marketplace for Steam wallet money. You can save tens of cents on your next game!

You're looking at yet another way Steam has managed to gamify shopping.

But somehow that's cooler to some than clicking on a button to show your appreciation for fellow posters.
