New 2001 Trailer

  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfF0vxKZRhc

    Woooooooooooooooooooooo.

    2001 was shown at the Cinerama in Seattle in 2008 (I think?) and one of my greatest regrets is that I did not go to see it.

    (If you didn't know, 2001 was specifically filmed for the 3-projector Cinerama theater system. Which then didn't catch-on. Seeing it in its original setting must have been amazing. You'll notice the trailer above is not in the Cinerama aspect ratio of 3:1.)

    Here's the original trailer:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2UWOeBcsJI

    EDIT: actually I'm not sure that is the original trailer. But if someone cut it to look like an original trailer, they did a really good job, so there you go.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    That movie was needlessly--perhaps pointlessly--psychedelic at either end. I'm not saying it was necessarily bad but if I hadn't read the book first I would've been "WTF?" and categorized it in a similar bucket to Zardoz.

    That remade trailer is hilariously wrong. It reminds me of that remade trailer for The Shining that cast the movie as a completely different genre.

  • Thanks for the heads up!!

    Hoping it comes to the big screen near me...

    My parents, who are the absolute least cool people ever, somehow ended up taking me to see this when it first came out - when I was...<imdb> ...geesh, when I was 6.

    And I still remember it.

    OK, I didn't manage to stay awake through the whole thing, but still.

  • This is a UK re-release, so. I don't know where you're located.

    Isn't going to another country just to watch a movie a bad idea when you're out of work?

  • Probably.

    Are you implying that I'm going to do that? Or... what the holy fuckballs are you talking about?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    @blakeyrat said:

    It must be awful, not being able to understand human humor.

    I was making a joke about your typo. Have a whoooosh flag.

  • @FrostCat said:

    I was making a joke about your typo.

    What typo?

    Are you... are you just vomiting out words? Do they have any kind of meaning?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Oh, the movie's being re-released in the UK, and you just thought to mention the re-release without bothering to add that detail, because everyone clicks through every video they see and reads the description.

  • @FrostCat said:

    And... you consider that a... typo?

    (Not to mention I didn't mention the re-release at all. I just mentioned the Cinerama in Seattle showing it a few years back. I just linked to its trailer.)

    I'm just going to file this brief conversation with an insane person under "word vomit", nod slowly, and quietly back away.

  • I certainly thought from the OP that it was being re-released in the US. I has a disappoint to learn that it's not.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    @blakeyrat said:

    No, you idiot. I assumed that you would be most likely to be mentioning an American re-release of a classic movie, because you're an American.

    Would you have mentioned this if it were being released in Mongolia, just in case any Mongolian TDWTF readers happened to want to see it?

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Clearly you need to get your shoulder aliens recalibrated to think like the ones from whatever lizard planet Blakeyrat's from.

  • Well I'm sorry that I didn't anticipate that the alien brain slugs would put that information in your head. I guess?

    I still don't see how that's a typo, or how FrostCat's blurb about unemployed people going to the UK is a joke.

  • ♿ (Parody)

    I don't see how it's a typo, but I don't think he meant it literally. Unless we're talking in the Joe Biden literal sense of the word.

    I was disappointed to later find out it was just a UK release.

  • @FrostCat said:

    No, you idiot. I assumed that you would be most likely to be mentioning an American re-release of a classic movie, because you're an American.

    So what's the typo you were making a joke based on then?

    (The reason I'm pushing here is I'm pretty sure the "typo" is FrostCat missing the period after the word "so" in that post. And instead of just admitting he misread me and his joke makes no sense, he went on this stupid tangent about brain slugs telling him about a re-release in the US. Let's watch and see what happens.)

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    You said "It's a UK release." I had thought you were talking about a US release originally. Therefore, UK would have been a typo for US.

    What's it like in your world? Do the colors sometimes confuse you too?

  • @FrostCat said:

    You said "It's a UK release."

    It is. So I didn't make a typo.

    @FrostCat said:

    I had thought you were talking about a US release originally.

    Well, ok? But I don't see how that's my fault.

    @FrostCat said:

    I'm pretty sure I'm not the one confused here.

  • I would not expect someone to post excitedly about a movie showing in another country, at least not without mentioning that it was in said other country, because there would, in general, be no logical reason to do so. If posting about it to draw the attention of readers in the other country, it would only be useful (thus logical) to identify the country whose readers might be interested. Without this information, the logical assumption would be that the poster was writing about something relevant (i.e., nearby) to him. It seems other readers made the same assumption.

    @boomzilla said:

    I don't see how it's a typo
    My initial assumption when @FrostCat said typo was UK <-> US — odd typo to make, but I didn't see anything else that could be called a typo. Omitting relevant information is an error, but not a typographical error.

    Edit: Fix a typographical error.

    Yeah, I wasn't paying close enough attention to notice that. Or at least, it didn't occur to me as a typo because it wasn't something random like UJ.

    On forums you frequent, if someone mentions an event and doesn't provide any more details, do you tend to assume the event is likely to be reasonably local to them? Or do you think they're likely to mention events thousands of miles away?

  • @FrostCat said:

    "UK" would have been a typo.

    Initially, there was insufficient information available to determine whether that was an error or not. It might or might not have been; we didn't know that it was not, until the continuing conversation revealed that it was actually correct. (I thought it was an error, too, at first.)

    Yeah, I interpolated that Blakey would mention things that he would be interested in, that happened near him, not things that happened thousands of miles away. Clearly that was a mistake and next time I'll ask him why he's writing about movies in England or a band being at a bar in Bangladesh.

    That would make a lot more sense for people actually in those small countries.

  • Of course. Knowing @blakeyrat is not in such a country is a factor in why I did not think he was talking about something in another country.

  • @FrostCat said:

    If someone talks about an expensive supercar, one made thousands of miles away, they must be planning to buy or rent one, right? Would you just assume they are?

    If someone talks about the NFL draft, they must be an employee of the NFL, and on the draft committee for a team, right? Why else would someone post about the NFL draft unless they were personally involved in the process? Wouldn't you just assume they are?

    Look, 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of my favorite movies. Perhaps my absolute favorite. To me, it having a new cut trailer, is newsworthy on its own. Obviously. Whether it was playing locally or not is irrelevant, and in fact, at the time I posted it I didn't know myself it was a UK release.

    You guys can do all the brain-slug-alien-communiques you want, just don't come here and start calling me an idiot because the brain-slug told you something counter to reality. I can't be responsible for content I didn't actually post.

    YMMV.

    iii) "Sit down with my family on an indoorsey-day, light the fireplace, get out my son's 2001 Monolith Action Figure, and re-watch 2001" is now on my todo list.

    FOUR} I saw Bar in Bangladesh play at the 9:30 Club once, and they were great.

    Sure, but even Blakey admits now he didn't know it was a UK showing, so that's not relevant.

    BTW, Blakey, I'm not calling you an idiot for whatever reason you think I am. I'm griping that you don't seem to have the capacity to understand what my joke was even after repeatedly explaining it, even though it made unwarranted assumptions.

    Is there anyone else who still can't understand it?

    So the brain slug whispers are context-sensitive? Do you have a flow-chart on when you decide to make shit up, and when you give it a pass and actually read the text on the screen?

    You people develop software, right? Do you just make-up requirements, then act confused when the designer tells you they never made those requirements?

    "Set the CTA button to pink."

    "Ha ha! What a funny typo!"

    "What typo? It's un-specced, and I think pink looks best."

    "Ha ha! No you said in the design document that it should blink."

    I'm saying your comparison was faulty, duh. You're the one who seems to need testing for parasite infections.

    Just admit it. If the movie had been near you, and "UK" was a typo and you had meant to type "US", "don't you think that's a little expensive?" would have been funny.

    I get what you were going for. What I don't get is:

    1. Why you made those assumptions in the first place (and this one is UTTERLY PERPLEXING TO ME)

    2. Why you didn't just fucking explain the word vomit ("joke") the first time I asked, instead of doing that stupid run-around. I wouldn't be ragging on you so much if you had just, the first time I expressed confusion, said, "oh I thought the OP said there was a US showing, nevermind." Instead of acting like I was the crazy one for not getting it.

    Maybe because your (I assume you thought) entirely reasonable response to my joke was " Or... what the holy fuckballs are you talking about?" instead of just "huh?" like a human would ask.
