Excel media player

So this guy is forced to work on a 100% locked and monitored machine at work. No internet, no youtube, no music. Just excel and office stuff.
So what is a computer person to do in such a situation?
How about turn excel into a media player.
As it turns out, you can lock down a machine so far you no longer can execute windows media player. The only browser was Internet Explorer (Version 7, so no HTML5 support either) with disabled Plugins.
Invoking Windows API commands summons tasks in the calling process, so I did the only thing I found reasonableThere was an Application that monitored my process usage. With 98% in excel the job went quite well and everybody was happy.
If anybody is interested you can download it here. I am still trying to add a volume control and a save feature that also saves the position of the active item. File has playlist support. Available media formats depend on the system, but mpeg codecs and some basic AVI codecs are built in by default. I don't know why mkv support was available on this machine

GitHub link in case someone is in similar dire straits.

And this is why employers should just unlock this stuff. Think of all the working time spent sorting this mess out. XD

It takes incompetent IT-personell at 5 hours to lock things down as well as the time spent on monitoring things.
Also, 3 hours are still 3 hours off work time. That is exactly what the employer tries to stop.
Filed Under: pretty sure you knew that already but meh

Was more thinking of the time spent to set up this retardation and the staff hired to enforce it.
Also, my experience from working in (software) engineering is that we all work ungodly amounts of unpaid overtime. I really resent being begrudged five minutes of facebook when they get a free four hours each day.
Yes, this is a sore one for me. I actually have to proxy into my e-mail from work due to "company policy". I am mildly surprised tdwtf hasn't made the firewall yet.

I have the power of proxy! nothing to worry about.

while this may be true do you want to deprive your coworkers of the pleasure of reading here?
-
They don't even speak Englisch, but who am I to suspend the pleasure of bovines. XD

What kind of place has programmers who can't read english?
How are they going to use Stackoverflow without it?!

Of course, Google Translate works on StackOverflow but like SO in general, reading != understanding

I'm the only gay in the village. Err, programmer.
