"The issue has surfaced after the avatar Anshe Chung (real name Ailin Graef) was attacked by animated flying penises during a virtual interview with CNET news, conducted in their Second Life bureau last month. A video of the attack surfaced on YouTube, and was then taken town after Anshe Chung Studios filed a DMCA complaint. The Sydney Morning Herald and the blog BoingBoing have also received similar notices."

All of these 'Second Life' articles are really making me want to try the thing out - especially the ability to add user-created objects.

There's the real WTF right there. Surprised I didn't see that one hit boing boing, they reported on the attack, and tend to get all riled up about DMCA abuses.
Seriously, how the hell is that a valid use of the DMCA?

.... I'm not sure if you're trolling or not. If you're not, the DMCA is overwhelmingly used as a bludgeon when it's not used for automated takedowns. since the ISP is guarenteed to not be held liable if they take down the site within 24 hours of recieving the notice. Most usually don't verify whether the material is infringing or not.
Want to knock a site offline for a while? Send a DMCA notice.

Holy cropping heck!!!! I almost hit the floor busting a gut watching that.
It's things like that that make me wish that real life was more like "second life".
I had a play with it a few months ago, and while it was fun (I made my avatar into the ugliest stumpy goblin-faced fat half-naked troll in a pink tutu I've ever seen) it was horribly laggy and it would take an age for each location to load. I also couldn't find an easy way to reset my goblin-troll-hag and somehow managed to make her naked and even uglier than before.
I wonder if it would have let me run my goblin-troll-hag back and fortch across the stage? That might have worked too.
