So, the old forums are just gone now?
-
All the shit I typed, all those years, all those hours I spent? You just fucking deleted all of it? Poof, gone? Didn't even give me a "hey maybe mirror the site, it's going away next week" heads-up? I don't even know how long its been gone, but Google's index is mostly deleted so it's been long enough.
Ben L's work on creating an import script, you're just sitting here saying, "oh BTW Ben L, thanks for all that work, but fuck you right up the ass because I ain't gonna use any of it?" Not that it would have mattered, since Google can't do shit with this horrible forum software you picked.
You are the worst at running a community, Alex. Yes, yes, I know "oh hey the hosting was free yada yada", but still. You suck at this. I am amazed at how possible it is to suck at something like this. I really had no idea.
Fuck. It's all just gone.
Why didn't you just kick me in the face, it would have been less painful. MUCH less.
-
That's about three buttumptions that I buttume are incorrect.
-
Do you want a hug, blakey?
-
At this point, I have no benefit of the doubt left for Alex. He's fucked up EVERYTHING about moving to a new forum. I'm sure he's fucked this up, too.
EDIT: even if it's down by accident, it's been down long enough for Google to wipe most of the indexing of it.
-
Do you have a pheochromocytoma? I always wondered that.

Paging @apapadimoulis
-
Fortunately, I only lost about 30 posts If you are right. But still, that's a lot of this forum's history just wiped clean.
Edit: Added missing verb.

Yeah, it's been real quiet on the old content import front. @ben_lubar, what's the final word on that?
It would be a pity if it all just disappeared.
-
passes the buck to @apapadimoulis

Ah.

I put that in the OP. Ben finished the script; Alex just never ran it. (And never will. Like I predicted back when you were donating all this time, Ben. Sorry. You should listen to the master.)
-
I wasn't sure if it was really the case, or hyperbole on your part (you reap what you sow). Well, I got it straight from the horse's mouth. It sucks.

How do you know he's not going to run it?

How do you know he's not going to run it?
By this point, it's been so long since @ben_lubar finished the import script, I wouldn't be surprised if it needed tweaking to account for changes on the Discourse side. Let's say Alex does try to run it. He just gets a bunch of errors, and sends it back to @ben_lubar, who tweaks it and returns to Alex for implementation. Alex sits on it for a few months (again). Rinse and repeat.
-
If he hasn't by now, he never will.
Then again, if I predict he'll never run it, he might see that as a challenge and do it purely to spite me. It's a little like quantum physics that way. But considering all the other stuff about this forum transition he fucked up, I'm betting that that's not going to happen.

I understand cannot you said just now.
Here, maybe this will help:
Let's Alex does try to accidentally it.
-
@blakeyrat I guess didn't notice the site's 503 not 404. Isn't this the exact same thing that happened not too long ago, where it vanished for a week or two until someone replaced the hamster?
-
The Wayback Machine seems to have a fairly decent collection of posts. Google cache ain't so bad either.
-
Old forums back up; I stopped the app pool when deploying the site, forgot to turn it on again.
I wanted to focus on getting the new site live before trying the import; so, it's live now, so I can now plan to do it! It seems we can pretty easily back up entire computer images via Digital Ocean, so hopefully one in November day we can coordinate on this!
I forgot, what time are you in? I'll be in Eastern during November.

Please remember that an archive of static html pages is better than turning it off forever, if you ever somehow get the idea to do that.

I think it’d be nice to have some sort of thing that redirects old urls to the new discourse threads?
That should be relatively easy I guess… any need to keep up the old content otherwise?
-
http://archive.org should make some kind of service where you pay them some money to archive your full site (if they haven't already) and just redirect all the requests to them.
I'd propose it to them, but their "forum" thing is an abandoned piece of shit that makes Community Server look like science fiction.

I'm in central time.

I know for sure that they accept video content on a regular basis from http://tasvideos.org/. Click on any of the 'latest publications' and the first 6 links will be downloads, in this order:
- movie file (smallest - this is what you use to reproduce/verify the run)
- .mkv torrent
- .mp4 torrent
- archive.org .mkv
- archive.org .mp4
- youtube
- (Not a video) Author's comments
- (Not a video) Forum thread
- (not a video) entertainment/technical ratings
