Has Anyone Seen This One?

  • Pointing them out to 180,000 non-IT employees is inappropriate.

  • Agreed, but perhaps it was the only way he could get anyone to listen.

  • If you read the article, you'll see that he didn't post it to 180000 people.  He sent it to his internal group, and some of them forwarded it on.  It eventually got sent to sites dedicated to speaking against his company.

It really pays to actually read the article before ripping on the guy.

Btw, is it just me or does the post entry system here deserve it's own wtf?  If you don't enable javascript, all paragraph breaks are eaten. If you do enable javascript, entry is slow, flaky, and haphazard.

It might be fine on the lan where it was made, but it takes quite a while before I can actually start entering my post.  Once I do, it sometimes stops abruptly to finish some internal process before I can continue typing.

Even better, there's no preview system. If I want to edit out an error, assuming I can click edit before the timeout hits, the timeout will take affect before I've actually managed to change my post and submit it again.

Whoever wrote the post system here really didn't get the KISS principle.  Ironic, really, considering the premise of the site.

But maybe it's just on my end and no one else gets an extra mysterious space when creating a new paragraph.

I read the article.  Tell me where in here it says Deal didn't send the email to 180,000 employees?

Kaiser Permanente isn't talking about an e-mail an employee sent to
approximately 180,000 other workers, but at times it seemed like the
rest of the health IT world was.

Deal added that he intended his e-mail to be an internal document.
"I hoped it would stay that way, but it didn't," Deal said. "Quite a
few of my colleagues decided to forward it to the media and
    anti-Kaiser Web sites."

Were it someone else that had forwarded his email to 180,000 employees, don't you think (1) he'd have mentioned that in the quote -- where instead he only mentions colleagues forwarding it to non-employee entities, and (2) that the person would have been named specifically?

You don't get suspended without pay for emailing your boss/department something that gets forwarded to the entire organization.

If you can't prove that a given person did it, in a court of law, and you name them anyway, you get sued. And you lose. Payout can run to the millions.

In today's lawyer-infested world, you do not make public statements about specific employees without either (a) their approval, or (b) absolute proof.

Yes yes, the forums are pretty much a WTF in themselves, although not as bad as they once were. "the real WTF is the forum itself" is one of the many memes floating around here.

I think that the general concensus is just that it's to be treated as a self-referential irony.

Personally I find the "Post" button moves when I try to click on it, but that only happens in FF.

I love the fact that if I do something (and I'm not entirely sure what), all of my spaces from that point forward are immediately replaced with  . It is infuriating.

  • Nah, The Real WTF isn't the forum software any more, it is that Alex still refuses to acknowledge that the forum software is the Real WTF: it has (d)evolved into a recursive WTF.

Not exactly.  Reporting that someone has been accused of doing something isn't libel, it's fact.  It's only libel if you state that the person in question actually did the thing without proof.  That is to say:

"Mr. X raped a child" is libelous, until such a time Mr. X has actually been convicted.

"Mr. X has been accused of raping a child" is fact, from the instant someone first points a finger.

Were this not the case, newspapers could never report on any sort legal action until the case had been settled.

Gah, ok. You're correct and I am mistaken. When he said he intended it to be in internal document, I took it to mean that he wouldn't be stupid enough to think that 180k people is internal or would be likely to stay internal.

I view "internal" documents as documents that don't leave a relatively small group, but that's not actually what it means.

Ah, it must be theDailyWTF's recursion then.
