The New TDWTF - just about done
-
OK I think we're just about done.
The logo has been tweaked a bit (the font is the codesod red), the mobile view has been fixed, and now the first 50 comments are streamed. We just did a data import, so HOPEFULLY it will contain all the recent data.
Feedback much appreciated and welcome. Otherwise, when the front page community hates it, I'm simply going to say that you guys OK'd it.
-
It's great. Hopefully, the forums get the same theme at some point.
-
It's better than it was but 'great' may be a stretch too far.
Then again I like the old design just fine and don't feel a burning need to Web2.0rhea-all-the-things.
-
I may be being a bit dumb here, but I didn't find it particularly obvious that when you go to a category view you can navigate through the months. It just looked broken in that there are several error'd entries in the dropdown but only one when you click the category
-
First nitpick - roll-down menus highlight the whole wrapper div on hover, but the only clickable part is the <a> element. That's really annoying in the "you don't even notice it, but it pisses you off" way.
I don't mind the layout, though it looks much better on ~70-80% zoom.
-
Here’s what I think:
- The article font is a bit too large, it should probably match Discourse’s font size (16px vs 14px)
- The color change when opening menus is a bit jarring
- Article titles look better without the uppercasing
- Author avatars in articles are not really needed, especially if they’re blank
The navigation seems to roughly match the current website’s, which is fine by me.
-
I've never been able to get that site to load.
-
Why the hell does Dicksores only let me click on a link once? I click once, and if I want to go back to it after closing the tab I have to highlight it and "Go To...", and we all know how wrong "Goto" is. ;)

Agreed. The entire div should be clickable, not just the text.
The color change when opening menus is a bit jarring
Agreed on this point. A crapload of red exploding on the screen is not pleasant on the eyes.

Is this new? It's doing it for me, but I've never noticed it before.

I have noticed it before and it is not really recent. This is just the first time I brought it up. Perhaps @sam could shed some light on why this is a thing?
-
No idea how I've missed it before then. Still... @discoursebot

Am I missing a "full articles" view or is there not one?
-
Click on the start of one and you will open it fully.
-
The author rectangle in the articles is... off... too big? Doesn't feel right.
I really like everything else.
-
There's something not quite right about the CSS here:
and here:
and the spacing is uneven here:
The color change when opening menus is a bit jarring
I agree with that. Perhaps it would be better if just the menu item was coloured and the drop down had a matching left border.
All in all, I like it. It seems to work well on my phone.
EDIT: Those screen grabs are on Chrome 37 on Windows 7.
EDIT 2: Chrome just updated itself to version 38 when I opened its about page, but the issues above persist.
-

I know you can do that; you can do that on the old site too. If I wanted to click on stuff for no reason, I'd go to http://mouseaccuracy.com/ and at least make it a game.
-
Looks alright, although as long as the RSS works it makes little difference to me.
Here's an updated Remify bookmarklet that works with Remy articles* in the new layout:
javascript:(function(){var b=document.getElementById('ArticleFull')||document.getElementsByClassName('ArticleBody')[0]||document.getElementsByClassName('article-body')[0];b.innerHTML=b.innerHTML.replace(/<!--/g,'').replace(/-->/g,'');})()
* article, singular; I haven't tested it with more than one.
-
umm... whoops?
-
huh. This is the Remify Script I've been using.
I was wondering why thedailyWTF.com was looking.... not right...
javascript:(function(){var i=0,r=function(n){return Math.floor(Math.random()*n)},f=document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0].getElementsByTagName('*'),o=function(e){return typeof(e.style)=='object'&&e.tagName!='SCRIPT'},s=function(){while(!o(e=f[r(f.length)])){}return e.style};while(i++<5){s().display=r(2)?'block':'inline';s().position=r(2)?'absolute':'relative';s().margin=r(2)?'0':'1em';s().padding=r(2)?'0':'1em';s().width=r(2)?'':'auto';}})();

There's something not quite right about the CSS here:
The issue with the ribbon is worse than I thought.
Open an article, then reduce the width of the window. The ribbon is off by different amounts depending on the available width.
Also, while I'm being overly picky about spacings,
-
It is aligned left on my phone. Looks like the view port meta isn't right, going to check when I am at home. The Hamburger menu is floating over the logo and the sidebar wtf needs to be more obvious it is an "Aside".
I was viewing an Samsung S3 mini with Latest Chrome.
BTW congrats on making it lightweight and not "janky"
-
Works okay in the emulator. If you use the SII emulator in Chrome you get pretty much the same problems as I am experiencing.
-
Chrome on a MacBook Pro. When I try to scroll up above the top of the screen (yeah, dumb but easily done with a touchpad) the logo disappears. It reappears once I let go and allow the page to spring back to the top.
Or we could just keep this as the resident site WTF as it at least doesn't break anything all that important. ;-)
-
umm... whoops?
You and @chubertdev say that like you think you're missing out on something.
-
actually, it's the damn firewall at work....
blocks everyhting but 80 and 443 unless specially whitelisted.
now that i am home it looks nice actually. matches nicely with discourse!

I may possibly be TRWTF
either that or that mikes hard lemonaide that i found in the back of the refrigerator was older than i thought...
-
Sounds like maybe you've been on the Discosauce.
-
-hic- wha? yoush lookin at me?
-
Well, it's not too bad, but it's still change for no reason. Remember: any change starts out with -100 points. You'd better make up those 100 points with improvements if you want your change to have a positive effect.
As for now, IT HAS A BIT OF A WINDOWS 8 THEME. THE COLOURS ARE GARISH, THE TEXT IS UPPERCASE AND WHEN YOU MOVE THE MOUSE, THINGS START HAPPENING.
What exactly is wrong with the old one, that it needs changing? This is not snarkiness, I really wonder what the intent is.

For starters, the forum software is...well, bad.

For starters, the forum software is...well, bad.
Well, I meant the design. But it's not like the new software is any better. It just sucks differently. In fact, I prefer the old one merely for not using a gigabyte of memory per tab.
-
well, sometimes we geeks just have to get a shiny thing, and that shiny thing almost always replaces an older shiny thing that was doing its job just fine nd wasn't shiny anymore because we had finally beaten all its inadequacies into submission, and we have forgotten or neglected to consider te pain it took to get it to that state and replace it anyway because it's no longer shiny.
that's my theory anyway. it's certainly why i got the Surface 3 when it came out...
-
I see it's taking the Discourse approach of not bothering to use the full width of the window for the content.
-
social fixer for the win here? (seriously, i literally cannot use facebook without that and am seriously thinking of writing a version for G+)
-
What exactly is wrong with the old one, that it needs changing?
It requires too little work to read, apparently.

I thought it was, but it wouldn't load at home, either.

Here's how you can tell: does it taste really fucking puke-inducingly awful? Then it's expired. However, if it merely tastes disgustingly vile, that means it's fresh.
-
what does it mean when drinking it causes you to see time?
-
in mobile view, it's hard to tell from the main list whether the author is listed below or above the article summary box unless you're at the top and can see that author comes first. ideally there would be some kind of visual connection or more separation between each article.
Also, the popout menu is kinda ugly with little bitty text on a huge flat gray background with no separator or border or color differentiation on the buttons. It looks more like one giant button with a list in it.
-
what does it mean when drinking it causes you to see time?
You shouldn't have put LSD in it.
-
AFAIKT i've never had the stuff.
-
AFAIKT i've never had the stuff.
Well, that wasn't the only possibility. I bet a perfectly-placed cosmic ray could've done it. See, for example, panel 5:
-
and i need to add that one to my collection.... i wonder is it on comic rocket?
it is, but five times?
que?
:head_scratch:
-
and i need to add that one to my collection.... i wonder is it on comic rocket?
I dunno what that is, can't help ya.
it is, but five times?
It's been on at least two sites. (Oh, and it's on it's...fourth? artist.)
Fair warning, if you don't like puns[1], bail out now.
[1] We're talking "makes more than Piers Anthony"-level.
-
Comic Rocket is a webcomic aggregator. it lets me keep my places in the archives as i catch up and iframes the actual site so the webcomic creator gets the pageviews and more importantly the add revenue they would have gotten if i went to the site directly.
and yeah erfworld is listed 5 times: https://www.comic-rocket.com/search?q=erfworld
-
Oh, I think I see why: three of the listings are for books 1, 2, and 3. Either that or whoever set it up on comic rocket didn't know what they were doing.
-
It's more likely an artifact of how the archives are set up on the site. CR expects a single unbroken archive to page through.
either way i'm glad i found that comic again! adding it to the backlog.
