Contextual advertising

  • I, for one, wouldn't like having my company associated with this keyword.

    copyright infringment

  • Those annoying things are turning up on a lot of websites. On Something Awful they have an entertaining way of being inappropriate most of the time. I don't know if that is intentional or what.

  • This stuff is the absolute SCUM of the internet. Forget spam, botnets, and everything else; nothing infuriates me more than having some irrelevant shit pop up just because I moved my mouse over a "keyword". I don't even bother reading the thing; I just close it as quickly as possible. I also despise those Flash ads that expand to 1/4 of your screen when you mouse over them. If I could kill only one person in my life, it would be the guy who came up these "contextual" pop-up ads. Thankfully I can kill as many people as I want.

  • Thankfully Firefox with Adblock Plus (Easylist) removes most of these annoyances completely.

I haven't seen one in a long time (flash ads or contextual green mouse-over things)

Opera's Adblock does too. Once I started blocking the servers that they got hosted from (and there's only a couple), I haven't seen them since.

I'd say "Boy, I wish marketers had a clue and realized that we hate these things," but then I realized that marketers are the ones that love popunders because the most people see them.

  • Oh man. I work for Scholastic. Could you post the URL of that page? I'll see if I can forward it up the chain to someone who cares.

    Thanks

    Nevermind, I found it.

  • You can nuke most of those pretty easily by simply adding "intellitxt" (without the quotes, of course) to your Firefox Adblock filters. This will probably work with any other browser that supports pattern matching filtering, like OmniWeb. And for the few that it doesn't nuke, it's easy to block them by looking for suspicious off-site .js files in the page.

At least they use a double underline to mark the magic keywords. When I see those double underlines I close the page and go elsewhere.

  • Not nearly as good as the "copyright infringement" one, and I didn't get a screenshot of it, but at one point I was reading an article on an IntelliTxt-ad-ridden site that mentioned San Francisco, and the "San" was underlined with an ad for Storage Area Networks.

Seriously, these sorts of ads are a WTF in and of themselves...

  • Google search ads are pretty good too, especially the ones from Ebay. Most recently, I had Ebay offering to sell me .308 Winchester ammunition, despite the fact that firearms and ammunition are on the list of strictly prohibited items.
