Discoursistency!
-
Just now, a whole bunch of threads (like Dell Downgrade suggestions) which haven't had new posts since early August, are showing up with a grey circle. And that one, there weren't actually 4 unread posts.

i've noticed the numbers in the circles are often lies.
i put it down to discoursistency and went about my business.

No repro here, FYI, so you can rule out "site hiccup" in favor of "user-specific site hiccup"

I find that the numbers are usually correct, at least when the topic list is loaded, but they fail to update correctly without a full refresh. If you navigate away from the topic list and then Back to it, the list may or may not have the correct anything. Clicking the "N new or updated topics. Click to show." will update those topics, but not any others that were updated while you were reading a topic. This morning, I returned to the topic list after reading a topic, and all the blue circles were gone. Ctrl+R is my friend.

I meant gray circles, not blue ones. All of a sudden, half a dozen, or more, threads that I had read some time ago and hadn't been posted in in > 30 days, had gray circles.
Some of those threads I even remember reading.

Ah. I have a fairly consistent problem that may or may not be related. When discourse screws up the blue circles, it is almost guaranteed that the "question" topic, which I don't read and should always have a blue circle, will have a gray circle instead.
