More Destiny

  • In addition to the lack of any kind of sound options mentioned before, here's two other bits of boneheaded design from Bungie's Destiny:

    FIRST:

    I have a bounty to complete a Strike mission without dying. Fine, let's try it. I pick the Strike mission as my destination and appear-- RIGHT IN THE FUCKING MIDDLE OF THE FINAL BOSS BATTLE where I die in less than 5 seconds. Ugh. And I don't mean "spawned in a safe place while the battle is in progress", I mean "spawned directly in the path of the boss monster's forehead laser attack."

    Ok, fine. So I leave that, and I figure: "I'll just create a new Strike from scratch so I don't get plopped down into one already in progress." Nope! Can't be done! Why would anybody want a fresh instance? Stupid players!

    SECOND:

    I fail to finish my bounty due to above, so I figure: ok I'm like 4-5 levels behind on the story missions so I'll do some of those. I do a story mission on Venus which leads to a new story mission on Reef. Select Reef as my destination, hit Go.

    Oops my phone rings while it's loading the mission. I walk away from my Xbox to take the phone call, talk to my dad for awhile, and when I get back-- WTF? My ship's back in orbit? Why? What happened on Reef? I guess my character died. Oh well, I'll just revisit it and--

    YOU CAN'T REVISIT REEF? Why the fuck not? You can revisit any other mission. So now I have literally no way of knowing what part of the story happened on Reef, because I took a phone call during a time when it's impossible to pause the game? What the fuck were Bungie THINKING with this shit? Were they actually trying to punish people who had the audacity to look away from the screen for a couple minutes? If they think I'm going to create a new character and play 15 levels-worth to see fucking Reef they are gravely mistaken.

    I can't even view the cutscenes, because there's no cutscene replay function. And if I go to mission summary, it says basically nothing at all. (Mission summary: nothing happened.) WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENS ON REEF!? Edit: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/70629342

    Fuck this game. What a waste of money. This bullshit makes Elder Scrolls Online look like masterful game design by comparison.

  • Hehe.

    Following you on twitter deciding to buy that game was like a watching a horror movie.

    Me: "Don't go there, big boobies girl.... don't open that door...."
    Movie: "Agghhhhhhh I'm being murdered for the sins of my sexual promiscuity!"
    Me: "Ah well, hopefully the funny minority guy lasts longer"

    You want a multiplayer FPS recommendation? Try "A Fistful of Frags". It's free and actually winnable for people who are not bored teens who can practice a whole day long.

  • If it makes you feel a little better you didn't miss anything really. The story in Destiny can be summarized as, "Shoot things in the face while Dinkle-bot does Dinkle-bot stuff".

    I'm going to be sad I'll never see a Blakeyrant about the Cryptarch decoding Legendary engrams because Bungie should have that patched before you get that far.

  • @MathNerdCNU said:

    Explain.

    EDIT: BTW if you like game-related Blakeyrants, it's too bad I wasn't using this forum while playing Elder Scrolls Online. It's a really, really, really poorly-designed game.

  • Basically the super-rare purple drops can currently decode into blue and green drops. So could the uber-rare yellow drops.

  • On purpose? Or just a bug?

    Considering the other aspects of this game, neither would surprise me.

  • Oh one thing I forgot to mention about the first problem: even after I did get into a "fresh" Strike instance, I still couldn't complete the bounty. Why? Getting knocked-out and having to be revived apparently counts as "dying". Fucking broken shitty game. They can't even keep their own fucking game mechanics straight.

  • By design. After "positive feedback" during testing.

    Any bounty that isn't "Shoot 200 of these, Collect 200 of these, Shoot 200 of these in the head" aren't worth the effort IMO. I tired the do a strike without dying on the Cosmodrome strike at 25 and still got fucking killed. Stupid fucking spider-tank.

  • Well that's the thing. It was the moon strike and I didn't GET killed, and I was fucking PUMPED because 1) it was my first time playing it (from the beginning) and 2) everybody else on the team was higher level and had to respawn at least once.

    Then I didn't get the reward.

    Why? Because Bungie either wrote the copy on it wrong (it was supposed to say "not killed or revived"), or somehow internally coded getting knocked-out and revived = killed.

    Wow! What a great way to get a player excited about your game, and then dashing their hopes!

    @MathNerdCNU said:

    Yeah maybe I'll just sell the non-collection ones off and buy the easy ones. Or more likely I'll just never play this shitty game ever again ever and fuck Bungie.

    @MathNerdCNU said:

    Stupid fucking spider-tank.

    Oh yeah. That's the worst boss I've seen in a AAA game in a very long time. Except the level 50 boss in Elder Scrolls Online probably is slightly worse. At least the tank is beatable in any character configuration.

  • @MathNerdCNU said:

    Basically the super-rare purple drops can currently decode into blue and green drops. So could the uber-rare yellow drops.

    That's being changed, however, with 1.0.2 - you're guaranteed to get blue stuff from blue schematics and so forth. You also get increased and cumulative chances on an epic every time you decipher a blue schematic.

    And the strike thing? I've been dropped into an ongoing strike only once now.

    The spider-tank, by the way, is really easy. Shoot the legs, avoid the turret strike (yeah, you really shouldn't eat a tank-shell, who'd have guessed?) and shoot the head once in a while when it's down (which it does due to you shooting the legs).
    Every boss has some kind of weak point which you'll find if you take care to watch when you're producing yellow damage numbers.

  • @Rhywden said:

    And the strike thing? I've been dropped into an ongoing strike only once now.

    I didn't really mind being dropped into an ongoing one (although I'm not sure if that would have disqualified that bounty, since I didn't do the "whole thing" without dying...)

    I minded being dropped DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF A BOSSES MOST POWERFUL ATTACK.

    I also minded not having any way to tell the game, "hey, only drop me in at the beginning of the strike. I don't care if the matchmaking takes longer or whatever."

    @Rhywden said:

    The spider-tank, by the way, is really easy.

    It's not bad because it's hard.

    @Rhywden said:

    Shoot the legs, avoid the turret strike (yeah, you really shouldn't eat a tank-shell, who'd have guessed?) and shoot the head once in a while when it's down.

    ... that process takes like 15 minutes of solid boring tedium. Once you figure it out in the first 45 seconds or so, there's no danger left. Just tedium.

    (I guess there is danger: the danger is someone on your strike team will get bored and do something dumb just to attempt to make the extremely long boss fight seem even slightly thrilling.)

  • The tank? 15 minutes? Naw, more like 5 minutes, tops. I've done that thing three times solo now (it doesn't just spawn inside the strike but you'll find it in the public map as well). This kind of tank also drops regularly on the public events as well. Usually doesn't live too long.

    The other bosses? Sure, make that 20 minutes. Those can take time.

    And for the strike thing: Start another one. It's that simple. I'm glad if I join an ongoing strike - the experience can be easily gained through other means and it's not as if the bounty is running away. But shaving 10 minutes off a 25 minutes run? And getting the tokens? That's nice.

  • @Rhywden said:

    The tank? 15 minutes?

    It felt more like 15 hours.

    @Rhywden said:

    Naw, more like 5 minutes, tops.

    ... 5 minutes of that would still feel like 5 hours. It's so fucking tedious.

    @Rhywden said:

    The other bosses?

    The eyeball boss after the tank:

    1. Can be killed in about a third the time, and
    2. is actually an interesting fight the entire time with a sense of danger.

    And that boss is in the very same Strike.

  • @Rhywden said:

    And for the strike thing: Start another one. It's that simple.

    AFAICT you can't start one. That is exactly my complaint. You can only tell it to join one. Whether you join at the beginning or halfway through is, again AFAICT, utterly random.

    If I'm wrong, say so. But don't tell me to fix my problem by doing something which is impossible to do.

  • @blakeyrat said:

    You can start a strike from scratch if you build your own fireteam. If you're going random, well, then I don't know what to tell you. It would be a bad idea to allow people to say: "Only fresh strikes, please!"
    Because then two people will be shit out of luck if someone drops out in the middle of a strike. But, hey, your precious bounty!

  • Look. You like the game. Ok. I get it.

    But you're defending broken shit here, buddy. It's ok to like a game and also recognize that it's shitty in a lot of ways. Believe me: this is coming from a guy who regularly plays Blood Bowl.

    So far you've said nothing to convince me that the mechanics I mentioned aren't broken.

    I guess to your credit you haven't even tried to defend the worst WTFs: the lack of sound options, or being punished by missing content for taking a fucking phone call.

    But please, unless Bungie cuts you a check, just stop. It's annoying. (And if Bungie does cut you a check, it's probably not a good idea to mock your customers by saying stuff like "your precious bounty!")

  • Wah, wah wah is all I'm hearing.

    Then again, that's probably par for the course for you from what I've gleaned on this board.

    What's next? You'll complain about how you died in Counterstrike because a team mate shot you?

  • @Rhywden said:

    Wah, wah wah is all I'm hearing.

    You're saying it's perfectly ok that I paid $60 for a game where I can't view the entire story? Because my PHONE RANG? This is an acceptable thing to you?

    Because that goes directly into my "just stop; it's annoying" file.

    Am I complaining? Yes. Are my complaints perfectly justified? Also yes.

    @Rhywden said:

    What's next? You'll complain about how you died in Counterstrike because a team mate shot you?

    How is that even slightly equivalent?

  • Well, that "we'll play the cinematic only once" is not exactly a new and unique problem. You might as well refrain from playing any game with any kind of cinematic.

    And I pulled the CS example because you're also dying a lot in CS. You'll die a lot in Destiny. It happens.

    The game doesn't really have huge penalties for dying - nothing like UO where you could lose all your stuff. Or FFXI where you could even drop levels. And so on.
    So, get over it. You died. Okay. Move on.

  • @Rhywden said:

    Well, that "we'll play the cinematic only once" is not exactly a new and unique problem.

    ... so? It's wrong for me to complain about a problem because other programs also exhibit the same problem? Is that what you're getting at, here?

    @Rhywden said:

    You might as well refrain from playing any game with any kind of cinematic.

    The vast majority of games I play that have missable cinematics either have a mode to re-show cinematics, or the ability to load a save (or chapter, or whatever) before the cinematic occurs. Or both.

    Destiny has neither. Which is shitty, broken, design I paid a lot of money for. This not ok.

    (The funny thing is since you can go back and replay any location on the map except this one, I can only assume they actually went out of their way to break their own game. WTF.)

    If you like shitty, broken things: fine! I'm not stopping you from liking them! Go ahead and play all the shitty, broken games you want! Roll around in the shit! Take a big whiff and get it right in your mouth and nostrils!

    But you might not want to visit my threads.

    @Rhywden said:

    You'll die a lot in Destiny. It happens.

    I don't mind dying if the game is fair about it. Spawning me in front of a boss's most powerful attack is not fair.

    Maybe you love dying in unfair, unfun ways. Fine! Go do that! But you might not want to visit my threads.

    @Rhywden said:

    So, get over it. You died. Okay. Move on.

    You're like everything wrong with gaming criticism concentrated into a single person. It's almost amazing.

  • I don't know what to tell you. You're probably expecting some magical fairy in the sky to make life fair?

    The spawn point happened to be in the bosses' path. Well, damn. Respawn and move on. Again, the bounty does not run away.

  • reaches for popcorn

  • @Rhywden said:

    I don't know what to tell you.

    Unless you work for Bungie, you're under no obligation to defend this game. You don't have to tell me anything.

  • Well, if you expect games to be perfectly fair in each and every instance - then you must be a very frustrated person.

  • So how long you two been married?

    Just wait until you lose three-quarters of a billion ISK in Tech Three and have to retrain a subsystem skill to V (which is five days of wall-clock time that you could otherwise use to train something else). Then you'll know what losing things feels like. (Why is it that just about every MMO made after the early 2000s wimps out altogether on character death? Oh, I know...*glares at WoW for driving the genre into the ground*)

    Still not as bad as the one time in Curse I managed to lose half of Hull Upgrades V to forgetting to update my skill insurance + a Sabre camping the undock of the only station with a cloning facility in the upper pipe there...

  • @tarunik said:

    That's half the point, @FrostCat. Making losses meaningful in the metagame means that you don't want to just Leroy Jenkins your shiny toys everywhere, which makes the overall game much more complex and interesting.

  • Discourse touched me in a no-no place

    Meh. I already don't want to Leroy Jenkins, because having to schlep back to my corpse is enough of a deterrent. But also losing a level (or some rough equivalent?) Yeah, no thanks.

  • @FrostCat said:

    Think of it as 'losing your currently equipped gear' more than 'losing a level'. 5 days of training isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things (losing Hull Upgrades V was worse, and that was entirely my fault for undocking without picking up skills insurance).

    It matters when you start caring about world persistence and the impact of your actions. Think of WoW etal like the Indiana Jones ride @ Disneyland; death is a cake, but it means you have almost no persistent impact on the world. On the other hand...the fact that losing your ship in Eve actually means something opens the door to notions such as claims over solar systems.
