What might be 'scoreboarding'?

  • I was recently asked by a friend of mine who is a translator to explain what is 'scoreboarding,' as she is about to translate some sort of EU meeting on that subject. Quick google/wiki search reveals that apparently it's a scheduling algorithm invented for a mainframe dating back to 1964 and I can't think of any wider context to that, or reason why a EU working group would discuss it. My best guess so far is that the word has another meaning which I am unable to find. Could anyone familiar with the term provide me with some more info?

     TIA.

I can think of at least a dozen entirely unrelated things. Everybody calls their idea "scoreboarding" and thinks they are being original. Why does this friend think that you would know? Is this actually a mistranslation to start with?

  • Unless we get more information on the subject & context, I'd go with 'keeping score', which obviously doesn't have any special meaning.

Yeah, assume your friend asked you for a reason. Tell her it's the name of a scheduling algorithm, and leave it at that.

(Didn't you read the "explain programming please" thread? You don't want to start a pattern of doing everyone elses's work for free.) :-)

  • Are you sure they didn't mean "scorecarding"?  A scorecard is a management tool that measures business data against predefined benchmarks and indicates the degree of success or failure.  This goes along with key performance indicators (KPIs) and dashboards.

Good call that's probably what was intended.
