You don't need to know about new mail if the mail tab is already open in your minimized Notes

I wasn't getting a system tray icon notification after upgrading to Lotus Notes 9 client (yes, having to use Notes is TRWTF)

This was reported to Quality Engineering under SPR ID MSUH7J6DYX, but it was concluded that this is not a bug. This is caused by the client being open, even if it is minimized, and the mail file is selected as the current tab. The purpose of the system tray icon is to notify the user that there is new mail when the mail file is closed or is not the currently open tab.
If my Notes client is minimized and I get mail without a system tray notification HOW IS THAT NOT A BUG???

It would be annoying to fix, therefor it is not a bug. Or at least that is my guess.

I bet the specification explicitly said this:

And there was no thought put into what happens if the app is in the background or minimized. Therefore "works to specification". Nevermind it is just plain wrong.

They may, in the past, have had bugs where people did not want the notification if notes was open but did not have focus (EG on a different monitor). Which makes 'on the background' a judgement call software can't make.
Would still assume minimized can be detected reliably.

If I understand it correctly this is the exact same behaviour Discourse offers. If you open a topic in a new tab and wait for people to message you in said topic you will not get a notification even if that tab is in the background.

But, it's a specification bug. We used to do that all the time at the previous job. It's more humane than closing obvious bugs. The funny part is that the guy in charge of the specification often submitted the bugs that ended up as specification bugs.

Because reading email is a barrier to doing work, therefore it's not a bug to not be notified about email. It's productivity enhancement.

Agreed. "Specification bug" is how we accept responsibility for fixing the underlying issue and assign it to a business analyst instead of closing it with "Works as designed, FOAD".

Found your problem. Why would you want to minimise Lotus Notes? Then you can't have the glory that is Lotus Notes on your screen at all times.

Sometimes it depends on how I feel about the submitter.
