When is J not a J?
-
After the thread where apparently I have thousands of posts unread, I figured the black hole of topic 1000 might be it.
So there's me digging out the posts I haven't liked (apologies to those who got like notification spam)... but in order to speed the process up, I was JL'ing my way through it.
Sometimes, maybe 1/3 of the time, it'd go up a post rather than down.
Sometimes, though, it would just forget which post it was on - so pressing J may end up being back to the post I was on, or it might be to the previous post based on where things were on the screen.
Don't think I've seen this one before.

I've definitely seen this many times, especially when mixed with other actions like L or expanding quotations or replies.

That, however, is a new one to me.

Seen it. Move along.

Well, those are new ...

Thought this was going to be about a completely different topic.

Is it possible you pushed J after scrolling away from the post you last J'd to?

No. I was getting this behaviour without scrolling at all. And we're talking about the likes thread, so not as if they were long posts pushing content off the screen or anything.

Well you see, the problem with J is it has multiple quantum states. Most of the time when you observe it, you will see a J, but the other times it will be an L.

Much image imbedment fail.

I've seen this many many times while browsing The Thread Everyone Likes.
I think it happens when you're browsing faster than the server can handle, maybe some late message from the server makes it scroll back up or something. I'm not sure however, since I didn't bother investigating at the time and I've stopped visiting The Thread a while ago.
I haven't used keyboard shortcuts much lately, partly because of this kind of crap.
Edit: on second thought, if you mean it goes exactly one post up, then that is new. I was referring to randomly going up a bunch of posts.

Mostly when it did it, it was going up exactly one post. Sometimes two, but mostly one. And I was very deliberately leaving it a few seconds in between keypresses too to see if that was relevant.
(I was mashing to start with then I slowed down and still observed it, so WTF)

And, based on the OP's observations, it appears to also have a quantum state equivalent to K.
