Escapees from D. Adams mind.

  • In this country, you will often find Kodak Photo Express machines in chemists and such like. They sit in the corner, endlessly looping thier speel. Yes, audio. I have no idea how staff maintain their sanity. Things like "This system is easy to use. It is so easy to use, you can do it all yourself", "Its fun, easy and fast", and similar vacuity. When I have seen anyone using them, they seem rather confused.

If all of that wasn't enough to make one believe that Cyrius Cybernetics had a hand in the design, Here is one of the messages that it gives:

"Share and Enjoy your pictures with all your friends"

I had a good laugh when I heard that first. Yes, I do think that there was at least one H2G2 fan in the dev group, and they were horrified at the monster that they were creating.

  • But invariably, these machines produce copy that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike photographs!

  • We have those in CVS drugstores in New England. I've asked the checkout clerks about them--how can they tolerate it? why don't they do something about it? The clerks just shrug their shoulders and say they don't notice it.

I've been meaning to write a letter to the chain, complaining about it. It's EXTREMELY annoying to me as a customer, and it's really encouraging me not to come back to the store.

  • How do you suppose they'd react if, the next time I'm in a CVS, I casually walk up to the Sirrius Cybernetics Photo Bot and unplug it? I'll bet if I did it while the store was crowded, the crowd's thankful reaction would prevent me from getting into any trouble with the store.

I feel the same way about the new Techron speaking gas pump thing. It starts playing annoying music as you pump and tells you about all the points you can earn

  • At first I thought "D. Adams" might be "Don Adams," who starred as Maxwell Smart, Agent 86, in the 1960's American television series Get Smart.  From further reading I see that it cannot possibly be Don Adams.

Then I thought it might be David Adams, famous Canadian ballet dancer, but that turns out not to fit the context, either.  Further research suggests that it's not Darwin Adams or Daniel Adams, either.

So, that pretty much leaves me with a blank on whom exactly this "D. Adams" might be.  Apparently he's quite famous in your country.

  • Douglas

Has quite a following in the US, and I presume also in the UK, his home country.

Not only there, virtually everywhere around the world where geeks exist. A while ago a strong evidence were people wearing a bathrobe and carrying a towel with them gonig to the cinemas. Oh and of course noone travelling the galaxy would ever get around reading a few books of him. Well, at least not alive.
