Overly excited "new" icon...
-
Thanks for letting me know it's a new topic, but couldn't you wait until you'd finished rendering the topic title before yelling NEW...?
-
The topic title has Unicode direction changing characters in it.
Debatably a bug, debatably not so much.
-
Totally a bug. <yes, yes, whoosh>
-
Totally a bug, but a minor one that very few forums apart from this one would ever see :)
Thought it was just happening for no reason, that's my default assumption here
-
And only forum users who have not muted the "One Post" category.

Unicode direction characters break A LOT of website layouts. I'd say 99% of the ones that let you enter text. Hardly Discourse's fault. You can even mask file extensions with things like "Document 1 - ann[RLO]cod.exe" which will show as "Document 1 - annexe.doc"
My favourite was an imageboard (aka 4chan-like) website that had this before every post:
[Optional message title in red letters] [Username in green letters] [Post date and time]
With a combination of right-to-left override and left-to-right embedding (or the other way around, I forgot), someone managed to make the title appear AFTER the username and date and time, confusing everyone. I actually went to the source code of the website to see if it was some kind of secret or admin-only extra field.

I'd say it's the fault of the website that lets it break. Granted, it's not a huge deal, but it's a deal.

How exactly does one even enter a RLO? Alt+202E doesn't do anything special, and converting to decimal and doing Alt+8238 gives me a period instead.

This is confusingThis is confusing!

Ooh, that's a thing? How?
-
Best way:
Alternatively:
-
Reminder: Muting a category does not automatically mute topics created in that category, it only stops them from showing up in the main, unfiltered topic list. You can still get notifications from topics in the "muted" category.
-
But nobody ever mentions me, so that's not an issue for me~
-
oops
-
-
No repro, I seem to have lost all new icons completely

Changing UI depending on which topic list you're looking at.
Marvellous.
Was going to file a bug report about that later - seems I needn't bother...
-
Changing UI depending on which topic list you're looking at.
But...but...it reduces visual noise! That's gotta be the #2 goal of Discourse at this point. Right behind infiniscroll.
Can't figure out what you're looking at? Hey, at least there's less of it now!

Didn't someone jokingly suggest
html{ display: none; }
sometime back?
-
It was suggested. I'm skeptical of motives when it comes to Discourse requests.

To be fair, having a "new" Icon in the "new"-category is a bid redundant.
Obviously not the most important thing to change but still better than renaming user levels.
Filed Under: At least they are changing something sometimes

But the redundancy is less bad than the ambiguity of remembering where I am vs just always seeing the "new" tag.

It must have updated while I was logged in. Ten minutes before, I was seeing the indicators
