My mobile Chrome just updated last night
-
They removed the refresh button from the task bar.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? !
Does anybody know how to bring it back or revert the change? This is literally beyond broken for how I use the browser and how my sites work that aren't pure Ajax.
I have other rants about the search shit, but I'll save that for later.
-
Can't you just hit return in the address bar?
I still have it on mine, just to the right of the address bar, are you saying yours is missing?
-
So let's review.
Click one button
Or
Click url bar, wait for keyboard to pop, press enter.
Repeat literal thousands of times per day due to actions on other sites.
-
Screenshot of latest version, refresh button clearly visible left of the address bar.
-
That's also the tablet layout. Phone layout looks different, and looks to be missing a refresh/stop button that can be hit in one click.
Once the 30MB update finishes downloading on my phone, I can complain too.
-
On mine, seems the refresh button is no longer in the address bar but still in the menu screen (next to the 'next' and 'star' icons). Didn't there used to be a 'prev' icon there?
Android 4.4 phone, if it makes a difference.
-
Any tips on how to restore the button, or revert the change?
-
They did put the refresh/stop button in the "menu", which takes time to open, and still makes it two taps. No option I can find to restore it.
Oh, even more annoying, now the "new tab" page doesn't default to bookmarks, but to "here's some random tabs you visited at one point", so yet another point where you have to tap more times than before.
And the "new tab" button is now even smaller, so I have to reach my thumb across my phone entirely for that.
-
A Japanese website without tentacle porn? This is obviously photoshopped.
-
The new tab doesn't bother me much, because I don't use bookmarks. I can see how that would be a shit change if you do though.
-
Oh, but they added a discofeature, go to the tab page, scroll to the bottom and swipe up 5 times.
-
I think Discourse is sending me secret messages.
-
You mean flipping all your tabs? That was in the previous version of mobile Chrome as well.
-
CANTREPRODUCE

It's still an annoying change but you can swipe down from the menu button and without lifting your finger quickly swipe back up to the refresh button and let go.
Less convenient, but not that much more effort.
-
you can swipe down from the menu button ... without lifting your finger
That's really not that intuitive at all. If you hadn't pointed it out, I would never have thought you could expand the menu without lifting your finger.
And it is a bit of learning to figure out where the button should be so you can be positioned when the menu opens up to hit it immediately.
-
Don't the buttons at the bottom of the new tab page determine what shows up on it when it opens?
-
If your phone came with Chrome, you can just go to the app info page (where you would otherwise find the uninstall button) and revert to the built-in version.
Otherwise, uninstall, manually find .apk of previous version and install that, I guess.

No it's not at all - I had to look up the gestures in the hope there was one for refresh.
I'd rather have the button back where it was but short of reverting to an older version and disabling auto updating then seems we're stuck with it.
-
Speaking of auto updating on Android, is there a way to disable it per app? I have had some apps where subsequent versions have had new permissions/increased battery usage/etc, and I'd like to be able to do "update all" instead of having to manually update every app except whichever one I want to keep.
-
Android doesn't auto-update if there are new permissions though.
Find the app in the My Apps page of the Play Store, then open it's page, tap menu and then uncheck Auto Update.
-

Refer to @loopback0's post regarding disabling per app.
I thought apps that required new permissions were asked about updating regardless of the auto-update setting.

Is the permissions thing still true? I recall a little while ago they made it so that only new permission categories would stop it from auto-updating, not additional permissions within categories that it already had access to.
As for the auto-update setting, I don't think it affects the Update All button, just the automatic no-user-interaction updates which I've already turned off globally.
Between Android and Chrome (and Chrome on Android), Google's product quality seems to be taking a Discourse lately.

Probably not, as that's not really classed as an auto update. You can hit Update All and then cancel the app you want to skip though. Is the permissions thing still true? Not sure - I don't really pay too much attention to the extra permissions.
-
Also, I just installed some wererabbit thing today on my smartwatch that supports automatically saving the last few versions of updated apps, because Exozet Games released a new version of Carcassonne and it is no longer among the precious few games playable on a 1.5" screen.
I'm going to contact them later and ask where I can get an old version...since I didn't have that before I updated.
-
Looks promising; I'll check it out when I'm not at work and have some time to conspicuously play with my phone.
-
OH LOOK, google is redesigning all of Android ONE MORE TIME. What's this, the third one, fourth one?
-
My mobile Chrome just updated. This is shit.
-

Of course, you can't do that on a Samsung phone, because the menu button's a semi-physical button that's not part of the screen.
-
The "button" within the application. The S5 button layout on my phone still annoys me though.

Judging from the screenshots, that's tablet-layout only. My Note 2 doesn't have that. The top of the window is the address bar and a box with the current number of tabs in it.

Yeah - the "open apps" and back buttons being the other way around to my Nexus 5 & 7 is a bit annoying but I've got used to it now. Was the same when I first went from an S3 to the N5.
At least on the Nexus 7 the refresh button is still in the same place in Chrome.
-
Click url bar, wait for keyboard to pop, press enter.
Or click on the dots and then on the reload button. But yes sillly it got moved there.
-

My first thought was that Jeff made it on the Chrome team
-
But F5 still works right?
-
Sure let me just issue that on mobile. ..
-
Fine, you have a work around for the refresh button. How about the back button?
... Wtf how are you supposed to use the forward button without a back button.?
-

Does your phone have a "physical" back button? That should work. It's dumb if it's the only option, but it should work.
-
It has a digital one next to the home screen. My point is: why are they removing literal core functionality that should be considered a bare minimum retirement?
Are we sure Jeff isn't talking to Google? He does reference gmail a lot.
-

I don't know. It makes no sense, though it does seem they're pulling an Atwood by sacrificing consistency and good design for... something.
-
It only appears on phones/tablets without a "physical" Menu button. Samsung kept to menu/home/back well after Google started trying to move manufacturers to back/home/multitasking

Right until Samsung went for multitasking/home/back.
-
Isn't the (current) android design paradigm to remove things from the menu because it makes the action hidden by a button press?
-
Wow, this is horrible. Just updated this morning for me. Gross.
