Pet Peeve: MSSQL installer
-
I've had to deal with this enough over the past few days that i just have to ask:
WHOSE [expletive deleted] IDEA WAS IT TO MAKE THE INSTALLER ALWAYS CREATE WINDOWS BELOW ANY EXISTING WINDOWS?!
it's bad enough that you create and destroy windows at a whim in your installer, but to have them always appear on the screen that has the mouse with the minimum possible Z-index?! MADNESS!
i can't do anything on the computer while the installer is running and keep an eye on it, because the [expletive deleted] window always pushes itself to the bottom of the z-index! And because it creates a new window every time i can't even use the always on top flag to fix things!
GAH!
[insert 5 hour blakeyrant here]
/me sigh
there. i feel a bit better now. thanks for listening.

The Sidebar WTF category is that way.
-
hmm.. okay, if you say so.
but does this belong in the sidebar or the error'd sidebar?
and does moving it take away the autoclose?
-
I thought Error'd was for screenshots and pictures of wtfs.
and: I think it doesn't take it away. give it a shot, though. You never know with Discourse!

You didn't put any screenshots, so error'd doesn't make sense. This is a good sidebar, though.
-

No, moving it to a different category doesn't remove the auto-close automatically. I think that's considered an independent attribute of a topic, I think.
-
I hate z-index shenanigans. One of the things I like about KDE is that I can usually move a parent window even if it has a modal window. IME, Windows is terrible about figuring out how to present new windows.
-
Oracle.
-
Well to whomever moved the topic and removed the autoclose. Thanks! you beat me to it!
-
@boomzilla moved and nobody removed the auto-close. Not sure if @PJH can do it or you just have to wait until it closes so @boomzilla can reopen it
Filed Under: Nobody is sure in Discourse. | If you didn't put MSSQL in the title nobody would know you are talking about it ;P
-
- 3 internetz to boomzilla
as for the autoclose. i'm not seeing it anymore on my screen. so discoursistency?
-
Hm.... refreshing removed it for me. Somebody could file that as a bug!
Filed Under: Boomzilla is the only non admin who can remove timer then, I think

Presumably, however that's communicated was cached in your browser. That action (removing auto-close) doesn't appear to show up in any edit diff that I can see. Maybe more powerful users can see that somewhere.
-
And of course, what's the first thing the MSSQL installer does?
Install the MSSQL installer.
Yes, to install MSSQL, you need to install the thing that will install MSSQL.
(insert obligatory tired old xzibit inception meme bullshit here)
And why, when I copy-paste a word and a space, does Dicksucks paste the word, the space, and a motherfucking new fucking line fucking following fucking the fucking space? And it collapses my double-paragraph spacing! (Though that might be HTML doing that; entities to the rescue)
Oh, and copy-pasting a word and a newline pastes the word and two fucking newlines.
-
Error'd doesn't autoclose topics to begin with. The only category that does on here at the moment is One Post.
-
It started in One Post.
-
Oh. Ok - that's weird then... (Thought it started in Error'd)
-
I wish I could remember what it was, I believe it was some sort of dev tool (ambiguous enough?), that took for freaking ever to install and was constantly spawning new command prompt windows that essentially made your computer useless as it was installing. Quad-core, 16GB of RAM and three monitors...all made useless by an annoying fucking installer spawning command prompt windows at a rate that could cause epileptic seizures.
-
Didn't some of the earlier Visual Studio installers do that? I know the later ones don't.
-
Now that you mention it, I do believe it was. VS2010 perhaps?
-
I think we've had LOOONG threads before on the MS SQL installer. The product itself is fine, actually one of the better RDBs avaialble, but the installer comes straight from crapville.
-
I don't always agree with @blakeyrat
but when i do it's about MSSQL
-
We obviously do not agree on acceptable levels of image compression.
-
among other things.
i conldn't be arsed to find a better image on google image search.
-
I don't always... what the...
But when I do it's... what's happening with my hand? Is that just a flesh-club? Why is my neck purple?
-
leave it to blakey to find a worse quality image than I did.
-
We used to have someone, I can't remember who (Dhromed maybe?) on the old forums whose signature was an image that, every time it was served up, the JPEG compression quality was notched down a notch. It was pretty amazing after a few months.
Anyway, no I didn't find a worse image, I just took your image and re-saved it with the JPEG slider set to like 2%.
-
The worst part of using mssql is installing it.
100% agreed, signed, certified.
-
-
Do have, regularly install new instances!
It's a nightmare every time.
Oh, and if it fails to install the first database, GOOD LUCK INSTALLING SUBSEQUENT DATABASES!
-
try this one on for size
i've been fighting with it so much trying to get SQL2008r2's business inteligence studio installed on a machine that has SQL2012 already installed.
every flipping time i try i get the error "the specified user already exists" I even got our domain admin (i'm local admin) to try it and he got the same thing!
i try removing the few components of sql2008 to try a from scratch..... THE UNINSTALL FAILS WITH THE SAME ERROR
so i say [expletive deleted] this! and try it on my work laptop that also has sql2012 installed, just for S&Gs
and it [expletive deleted]ing WORKS!

[expletive deleted]‽

Always install visual studio first, then MSSQL.
NEVER do it the other way around.
Ever.
To clarify, Most visual studio installs also install sql server express (or variants thereof) unless you explicitly tell it not to. This falls under my previous post of 'Good luck trying to install a new database if the previous one failed' category.
-
order of installs was same on both machines as far as i can tell.
VS2012
SQL2012
VS2008 (because some BIS projects can't be upgraded without breaking all to hell)
and the last one i'm trying:
SQL2008r2except i can't do that on the desktop. btu the laptop is okay with it.
i think i need to format the desktop soon. it's getting weird...
-
The correct installation order:
VS2008 (presumably for BIDS)
VS2012
SQL2k8R2
SQL2k12

Installed VS2013. Uninstalled SQL Server Express. Installed SQL Server proper. A pain in the ass.
-
ideally yes, but then i never planned to have to use VS2008 again so i didn't install it until now when i needed to use it because upgrading the project made it go kersplody (i don't even want to know why. i just don't)
-
If you absolutely must install it out of order, do a custom install for VS2008, and explicitly order it to only install the core application, and leave off EVERYTHING related to sql server - including localdb / sql express.
-
did that actually. also left off vc++ anv vb because [expletive deleted] them.
-
For newer versions, I've also had problems when trying to install lightswitch/blend*, they don't seem to do anything useful (though I'm probably doing it wrongtm)
As an upgrade version / downgrade from higher version
-
tried lightswitch. it's cool for a simple data entry UI with a table or two.
for anything more....
-
You really need a new host, everything you post up is always blocked for me.
-
I really should actually host them.
i just go to images.google.com and grab one that fits.
but i am le lazy.
this one is a grumpy cat obama style campaign poster that says 'NOPE" instead of 'change'

Yeah, I think it was @dhromed. He applied a random photoshop filter or something every so often, IIRC.
-
i have a webhost i could use for that...
hmm... would it be better to do my avatar or my profile background?
more people see the avatar but there's less room to play with...
-
-
Always do it SQL server first. Why? Because if you try installing the dev version over the express version you need to fuck around with firing the installer up from the command line.
If you do install sqlexpress with vs use the upgrade wizard. Tbh i've never needed anything above express.

So I need to install the SSIS components on some servers. Because they're going to run SSIS packages targeting a remote database server.
There are 4 servers (yes, it would have been cheaper to give us 1 gigantic VM with a metric buttload of CPU and RAM, but wank and managers happened). All identical, sourced from the same VM image. So I click through the installers simultaneously, ticking off all the same boxes and hitting all the same buttons.
The files installed vary. Dramatically. Go back through, tick off some extra boxes on all servers. Some servers change nothing. Others suddenly get everything they need. Others get everything they need under x64, but in x86, they're still absent.
Since our app depends on some x86-only drivers, go through installer AGAIN, in 32bit-only mode, and install all the components from the second pass.

I want a window manager without support for z-indices.
I mean, if a 3D-rendered scene can have multiple things in the same place, why can't my desktop?
