Proofreading...what's that?

  • Having been an active guest of this site for a number of months now I have decided to join and post my own WTFs because frankly, this site provides so many laughs, that sometimes I almost burst out in laughter during a class or two of mine at the college I'm attending. Yeah I know it's bad, but hey, it is relatively boring sitting in a class listening to an instructor go on about absolutely nothing most of the time.

Anyway, this WTF comes from my 8th grade brother's Computer Lab Syllabus...I guess that's the best word for it. It's basically a sheet you read and understand the rules by and turn in a signed part of the sheet stating you agree to said rules, but it also includes the course material covered and such, so yeah a conglomeration.

I'm only typing the WTF part of this page, since it is the part with the most hilarity involved:

Internet is a Privilage and the privilege will be remove if student access the internet without completing their work, maintain a grade of B- or higher, use any form of email or chat, or by surfing to inappropriate web sites; as stated on the "Electronic On-Line/Internet Services Student User Agreement".

I'll leave it all up to you to decide what to do with a "bad" student.

  • You should write back and say "Teaching is privilage, and privilege will be remove if teacher access the computer without running grammer check, actually reading what they wrote, or sending anything like this home again!"

  • Well, I hope that this issue is corrected soon, because you would think that with all the students having signed this consent form, they have technically signed an incorrect form which would not legally hold the school responsible for any illegal or inappropriate activity the students may involve themselves in. I feel bad for all the parents myself. Personally I would request a new consent form be written up in correct grammar and correct spelling, so that parents would not be totally reliable for something their kids do. I mean after all, the parents I am sure would not encourage their kids to illegally hack the government...unless they're communists(kidding of course, for those that take things in life too seriously), but that's an entirely different matter altogether.

Because of the obvious problems with subject-verb agreement, the sentence really is entirely ambiguous. This could also be read like:

Internet is a Privilage and the privilege will be remove if student access the internet without

       - completing their work

       - maintaining a grade of B- or higher

       - using any form of email or chat...

So students aren't allowed to use internet for non-chat purposes?  Or get B or better grades?

The verbs are probably meant to go with the subject "Student." They still don't agree or make any more sense.
I would send the letter to every local newspaper and to your school board with a letter complaining about illiteracy of the staff at your brother's school. I assume the errors are not your typing.

  • I would take a red magic marker and correct it, just like a teacher would correct homework, and then send that back signed.

Haha, I actually did that for some of the stuff my English teacher passed out back in high school. He didn't find it too amusing.

So students aren't allowed to ... get B or better grades?
The policy is tough, but fair.

Look to your left, look to your right, now look in 8 other directions, 87 of you will not pass this class.
