"I want to try and hack the ATM"

  • The following conversation was overheard in nearby cubicle.

It took place between a project lead and his manager.

PM: Hey, what is this about this person that I'm hearing ?

PL: Oh, he called up saying that he wanted to try and learn how to hack an ATM.

PM: He said you turned him away rudely.

PL: Yea, hacking and security is a vast topic. Once can learn it just like that.

PM: Does he show any enthusiasm in learning all this?

PL: Nah, he must have read some novel or must have seen some idiotic movie. He should try and understand the seriousness of the situation. One cant be talking like this at a deployment location.

  • So a guy called up and wanted to learn how to hack an ATM?  And he thought the company would tell him?  That's my best guess at why this is funny.  Why does the PM wonder about his enthusiasm?  Does he want to hire him??

I think the LOL-factor of this would be greatly increased with some embellishment or context, I'm afraid.

The man in question was a member of the product deployment team. One of the modules in the product contains the code to interface with ATMs.

It's one thing to doubt in-house code quality and quite another thing to do at your clients place in such a prolific manner.

Oh, these are the curious folks who want to know everything under the sun.

  • Ah, what great confidence is inspired by this kind of conversation. This sounds like the prelude to the sudden logging off of a user, changing of a password, and coincidental appearance of a security guard to escort him out of the building.
